Enjoy the pitter-patter of a soft drizzle as you look out the window.  There's an old dry wooden bench in the courtyard soaking up each drop.  The rain seems to paint the bench like a leopard's coat.  A mouse takes refuge beneath the bench; some of its fur matted down after being struck by the rain.  The mouse begins to groom itself, vigorously running its forepaws about its head and sizable ears.  Then, seemingly satisfied with its unexpected ablutions, the mouse summoned up the courage to scurry across the courtyard to a nearby flowerbed.  The furry critter disappeared into the safety of some flowers that are being coaxed into a type of stilted, yet rhythmic dance choreographed by the rain.  Your attention turns back to the bench, now entirely darkened by the effects of the rain.

Sound masking is the introduction of generated sound into an environment to mask unwanted noise.  It is often used in offices or other places of business to increase productivity and reduce anxiety caused by conversational distractions and other unwanted noise.  Sound masking is often, erroneously, referred to as "pink noise" or "white noise".  Sound masking is a specifically tailored sound used to cancel out other unwanted naturally occurring sounds in one's environment.  Sound masking relies on auditory masking; it occurs when the perception of one sound is affected and compromised by the presence of another sound.
