“Jericho, Where Justice and Mercy Meet,” a sermon from Joshua 6:1–27, preached by Pastor Adam Miller at South Chatham Community Church on October 4, 2026.

Preached September 27, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Book of Joshua · Text: Joshua 5:13–6:6
Outside Jericho, Joshua meets a man with a drawn sword and asks, "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?" The commander of the Lord's army answers, "No." The real question is not whether God is on our side. It is whether we are on his. This sermon also looks at Rahab, Achan, and Jesus' temptation, and warns against presuming on God's favor.

Preached September 20, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Book of Joshua · Text: Joshua 3:1–5:12
Israel crosses the Jordan on dry ground, sets up twelve memorial stones, renews circumcision, and keeps the Passover. God gave these "divine object lessons" so that children would ask, "What do these stones mean?" This sermon asks how faithfully we pass on God's works to the next generation, including through baptism and the Lord's Table. When a generation forgets, the result is the Book of Judges.

Preached September 13, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Book of Joshua · Text: Joshua 2
Rahab was a Canaanite prostitute in a city under judgment. She calls on the Lord by his covenant name and asks for chesed, or steadfast love. The scarlet cord in her window marks her house to be spared, and she becomes an ancestor of Jesus. Her story shows that God's grace reaches even his enemies, and it warns us to repent while our hearts are still soft.

Preached September 6, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Book of Joshua · Text: Joshua 1
Moses is dead, and Joshua must lead an outnumbered people into a land of giants and walled cities. God's charge to him comes three times: be strong and courageous. That courage does not come from digging deep. It comes from God's promise ("I will not leave you or forsake you") and from meditating on his Word day and night. This is the first sermon of the fall series.

Preached August 30, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Summer Psalms, Book II · Text: Psalms 69–72
In his old age, betrayed and weak, David looks back on a lifetime of God's faithfulness: "Even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation." This sermon ends the summer series with a call to leave a gospel legacy. That legacy includes both the victories we have seen and the grace God showed us in our failures.

Preached August 23, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Summer Psalms, Book II · Text: Psalms 65–68
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us… that your way may be known on earth." Psalm 67 shows why God blesses his people: so that we can be a blessing, and all the peoples will praise him. This sermon connects God's blessings, his just reign over the nations, and the church's call to worship in a way that others can see.

David wrote these psalms during his second time in the wilderness, when he was fleeing Absalom. They show a heart that seeks God whatever the circumstances. This sermon gives practical ways to seek the Lord every day: slow reading and meditation, using the Sunday bulletin in your devotions, and an evening review of where God was present in your day.

Preached August 9, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Summer Psalms, Book II · Text: Psalms 56–60
The imprecatory psalms, prayers that call down God's judgment, can make us uncomfortable. But David shows us what to do with anger: bring it honestly to God instead of acting on it ourselves. The stories behind these psalms include Doeg, Nabal and Abigail, and Absalom. Through them, this sermon teaches that we should "cast your burden on the Lord" and leave vengeance with him.

Preached August 2, 2026 by Adam Miller · Series: Summer Psalms, Book II · Text: Psalms 51–55
After the prophet Nathan confronts David, David prays Psalm 51: "Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." This sermon looks at what real repentance is, why every sin is first a sin against God, and why the sacrifice God wants is a broken and contrite heart. It also explains why receiving God's forgiveness is what makes it possible to forgive others.
