What has the circumcision timing to do with anything? | Romans 4:7-13 | Ian Goodman
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
9 Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised."
What is Paul’s purpose in including this in his overall argument? It seems a strange thing to bring up. What does the timing of Abraham’s circumcision have to do with anything? I would suggest it has a great deal to do with a great deal.
Firstly, Paul is in the middle of arguing for the great central claim of the Gospel, that one is justified in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone. The date of Abraham’s circumcision has more to do with this than we might think. For if Abraham was circumcised BEFORE he was justified then it could be argued that he was justified BECAUSE he was circumcised. Paul is wanting to make it very clear
- that Abraham was not justified after but before
- that he was not justified because of his works, but he performed works because he was justified.
There is a second reason why Paul brings up the timing of Abraham’s circumcision, that is to show that Abraham is the Father of both the circumcised and the uncircumcised. All people who believe—and who follow in the footsteps of the faith that Abraham had—are indeed children of Abraham. Abraham is the father of all the faithful—of all believers. In fact, if you are a believer then you are more the son of Abraham than the current unbelieving Jews.
Let’s all stand and marvel at what the Lord has done through this man Abraham, but let's stand in far greater awe at what God has done through the one Man Jesus Christ. In Him we are justified; by faith in Him we are saved. Praise God!
