A widely used model of the impact of coronavirus now shows Florida’s peak in deaths will come earlier — and be higher — than previously estimated. The University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation shows Florida’s peak is expected on April 21, at which point the state will see 242 deaths per day.

People can start making appointments on Monday for coronavirus testing at the drive-thru site about to open at the South County Civic Center west of Delray Beach. It’s Monday, March 30th and here are today’s top headlines from the newsroom of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. I’m Trevor Ontiveros. A Holland America cruise ship, carrying four bodies and scores of patients with coronavirus-like symptoms, has been given permission to cross the Panama Canal, allowing them to continue their journey toward Fort Lauderdale, according to passengers on the ship who said the captain made the announcement on the intercom Sunday.

It’s Friday, March 27th and here are today’s top headlines from the newsroom of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. I’m Trevor Ontiveros. A total of six people at a Fort Lauderdale assisted-living facility have died from the new coronavirus. Three more deaths at Atria Willow Wood were reported Thursday. At least 16 people at the facility have tested positive for the virus. A Broward County doctor became the first area medical professional to die from the virus.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared there is a “major disaster” in Florida, two days after Gov. Ron DeSantis requested that designation because of impacts from the new coronavirus. The action clears the way for federal funding to help all areas in the state that have been hit by the public health emergency.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is asking seniors — and anyone who has traveled from New York state in the past three weeks — to quarantine in order to help stop the spread of the new coronavirus. The requests came in the form of two executive orders to be issued Tuesday.

As Florida reported more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus, the first death was reported in Palm Beach County. More than half of Florida’s cases are in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade County. A new drive-thru testing site for people with symptoms will be open Monday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
