City On a Hill: Anger

Matthew 5:21–26

Introduction:

When anger RULES in your heart, it will RUIN your life.

1. Anger is rooted in the heart. (vv. 21–22)

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

1. Anger is reckless. (v. 22)

Hebrews 12:14–15 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

            Gives the enemy a foothold

            Destroys you and others around you

A heart RULED by anger will RUIN the best things in your life.

1. Anger must be repented (vv. 23–26)

Forgiven people forgive people.

City On a Hill: Relationship, not Religion

A religion without a relationship is just a bunch of rules.

The foundation of our faith is grace, not our good works.

1. Rules without a relationship is just religion.

                        It cannot save you.

Romans 8:3-4 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

                        It cannot sanctify you.

Romans 5:20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. . . .

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. . . .

1. Renew a pursuit of Jesus, not rule-keeping.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

1. Renewal will result when you pursue Jesus.

Proverbs 24:16 Though a righteous man falls seven times, he will get up. . . .

A pure heart precedes a powerful life.

John 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name. . . .

1. A heart RESCUED from brokenness

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?

Luke 6:45 A good man produces good out of the good storeroom of his heart. An evil man produces evil out of the evil storeroom, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

1. A heart RELENTLESSLY devoted to Jesus

James 4:4 Adulteresses! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy.

1. A heart rewarded for its DEVOTION

A heart fixed on CHRIST will never lack CLARITY.

Introduction:

A life without mercy is a life without freedom or purpose.

1. Consider the MAGNITUDE of mercy

Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Mercy GIVEN doesn’t mean mercy RETURNED.

1. CONSUMED with the MISSION of mercy

Quote: “Start praying for an opportunity to point people to Jesus, and that’s a prayer that God can’t wait to answer.”

Quote: “If we had an accurate view of eternity (both the joy of heaven and the hopelessness of hell), everything would change about our priorities.”

Your hunger can be the pathway to personal blessing or burden.

1. Hungry and not Happy

God is more concerned with WHO you are not WHAT you do.

You don’t know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.

Quote: “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition, when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by an offer of holiday at sea, we are far too easily pleased.”
