some time now – to meditate together on one of the more than 100 names for Jesus

we find in the bible – to pray together as a community

Welcome to the Podcast! Today Pastor Rob Ayer is preaching about opposition about the Israelites that they faced when rebuilding there wall.

Nehemiah was called of God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and its city gates – which

doesn't sound very glamorous or particularly spiritual – but it was God's will for his life

at that time.

Sometimes God's will – His calling – is like that in our lives: mundane, routine,

unspectacular. In a moment. For a time. Even as a thing we might do for a long time!

The key, then, to knowing and loving God isn't necessarily in the dynamic nature of the

something He has called us to do but in our obedience to surrender to His good will for

us no matter how little or big that something might be.

Because obedience – choosing God's will over ours – is a measure of our love for God.

Have you ever tried to change someone's mind?

Maybe a child who thinks bedtime is negotiable. Maybe a family member who is self-

destructive. Maybe a friend who still thinks the Canucks are worth watching.

Or maybe a boss or coworker who is dogmatic and not very open to change.

If you were to ask AI, "What are the steps to changing a person's mind?" – you'd find

this summary of internet collective wisdom…

Steps to Changing a Mind

1. Build rapport

2. Validate their emotions

3. Ask open-ended questions to identify possible gaps in their thinking

4. Sow seeds of doubt

5. Allow them to arrive at their own conclusion

What do you think?

These steps make some sense, right?

We might even adopt them as a process or a strategy for sharing our faith with others.

Welcome to the Podcast! Today Pastor Rob Ayer is starting a sermon series on the book of Nehemiah.

I was cupbearer to the king (Neh. 1:11).

This is the line that ends Neh. Chp. 1.

If I were directing a movie – a biography - about the life and times of Nehemiah – this

is where I might begin his story: a close-in shot of him just about to taste a beverage

for the king – to proof it against any hint of poison in it.

What kind of job is this?! What might it tell us about Nehemiah? And what does it tell

us about his relationship to King Artaxerxes?

Well – I think we can safely assume that it was a dangerous job – one where you could

literally die with a sip or a taste. It wasn't uncommon at the time – after all - for kings

to be poisoned – esp. during unstable political times.

Nehemiah was a loyal and trusted servant of the king who had a deep knowledge of the

politics of how things worked. He was a trusted confidant.

This term of endearment is used – here – of God's love for His Son.

But it's not the only place it is used in the Scriptures.

In the OT – the Hebrew word often translated as "beloved" is "דּוֹד" = "dod" – which

appears frequently in the Song of Solomon – where it's used to describe the intimate

and passionate love between a bride and groom – symbolic of God's covenantal love

between Him and Israel – between Him and His people.
