Publisher's Summary:
Leila Massey, a young L.A. screenwriter, is on the verge of hitting it big when she falls into the grip of drug and alcohol addiction. Her descent into the narcotic underbelly of the city leads her to a commune in the desert, a filthy room at the Chateau Marmont, and, eventually, rehab. Will Leila continue down the dark path of addiction? Or will she make it as a successful writer? Based on the author's own life, Liana Maeby's brilliant debut novel is raw and haunting, and simultaneously incredibly astute and humorous. South on Highland explores true identity and questions our culture's response to addiction and sensationalism.
Members Reviews:
An intriguing and darkly humorous look at an addicts life.
I really enjoyed Liana Maeby's writing, she is a natural story teller, and the writing flows seamlessly. This is a sad, interesting, yet darkly humorous semi-autobiographical look at a drug addict's lifestyle in Southern California, and I was entertained by the whole thing. The only aspect of this book that kept it being 5 stars for me was that Leila often comes across as quite pretentious in her telling of certain events in this story. The "I was completely wasted and strung out on drugs, but still aced every test because I was gifted" mantra, kind of came across as showing off. In some ways it reminded me of how Bukowski used to describe some of his tales of being a degenerate but still excelling at his craft, yet Bukowski was so gifted he could pull off the pretentious outlook on his life. Despite this one complaint. I still would highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from her.
Got addicted to finishing this novel!
I had no idea what to expect, I follow the author on Twitter and she's funny.
This is a dark, deep, and at times funny read that I could not put down. It's been a while since I've read a novel, and I knocked this out on two flights over 3 days.
The writing style makes it an easy and addictive read.
This novel stands apart in good ways. Character is very likable
An invigorating first novel. So many(too many??) memoirs about addiction and Hollywood and youth...This novel stands apart in good ways. Character is very likable. She doesn't want our sympathy. She is a smart, feisty, narrator who speaks her truth and her "disease". I found this read disturbingly fine!
powerful
This author can write! She absolutely put me in the place and time, and really conveyed how rational an addict's reasoning seems to them. The rehab segment where she finds herself " just the tiniest bit interested" I found particularly powerful. This book left me with two questions; how much is autobiographical, and when's her next book out?
Wonderfully crafted novel
Wonderfully crafted novel. I'm not much of a fiction reader but read this as a break from all the required historical reading I have to do. Such a welcome break. One of those "couldn't put the book down" moments. Finished it in one day, and even now still mentally linger over her prose.
