Ever since streaming platforms became a thing, there are more and more people who are listening to music nowadays. Not only that, but people are consuming more than they ever have before as well. As a producer and a songwriter, there is more opportunity now than there ever was before too. You have more places to put your song, and more potential people to reach. Your audience is waiting to find what you have to bring them. But in today's busy, noisy world, how can you stand a better chance of getting to them? Today I share with you what I think is the single most important element of any song you will ever write, hands down. It's the part of your song that people will remember, or not remember, and is the part that gives you your chance to make an impression on a listener. All too often we tell ourselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, that if we just think long enough, hard enough, or envision enough, our music production goals will naturally just happen. While it's important to envision yourself succeeding at your goals, I'm here to tell you today that is simply not going to be enough. You have to show up and do the actual work, in all it's messiness and imperfections.

As Steven Pressfield writes in one of my favorite books, "It's the not the writing part that's hard. What's hard is sitting down to write." Furthermore, he also says, "The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome." To me, this is just another way of saying that you have to get over yourself and your own need for things turn out as good as you wish they could be. You won't have a finished product on your first demo, so stop letting it be an excuse for not writing it. I'm as guilty of this as anyone around, but I've recently turned the corner and started cranking out imperfect demos anyway. Are you ready to join me?

I'm very excited to be sharing this interview me and my friend Nick did with Christoffer Franzen, the Gothenburg, Sweden based composer and songwriter. This interview was part of my last podcast, and was done in late 2016, but it is still as relevant as ever. Christoffer has very keen musical instincts that are rare in most songwriters, and his productions keep the listener engaged every moment of the song. In this interview we dive in to some topics such as: his background in music, how he got started playing, what it's like to be feel isolated as a writer, his insomnia, and some specific song breakdowns.
