All too often we tell ourselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, that if we just think long enough, hard enough, or envision enough, our music production goals will naturally just happen. While it's important to envision yourself succeeding at your goals, I'm here to tell you today that is simply not going to be enough. You have to show up and do the actual work, in all it's messiness and imperfections.
As Steven Pressfield writes in one of my favorite books, "It's the not the writing part that's hard. What's hard is sitting down to write." Furthermore, he also says, "The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome." To me, this is just another way of saying that you have to get over yourself and your own need for things turn out as good as you wish they could be. You won't have a finished product on your first demo, so stop letting it be an excuse for not writing it. I'm as guilty of this as anyone around, but I've recently turned the corner and started cranking out imperfect demos anyway. Are you ready to join me?
