Jesus tells the story of a shepherd leaving his flock of ninety-nine sheep to chase down one that had wandered off. Through the parable, Jesus gives a clear picture of God’s heart that relentlessly pursue those who don’t follow him.

Jesus often spoke in parables which felt like to many that he was talking in some sort of code. Jesus never intended to hide his wisdom or keep spiritual truth from the listeners. Rather, Jesus wanted people to lean into what he was communicating and think through what it meant for their own lives.

In today’s parable Jesus tells the story of a man planning an elaborate party only to have his invited guests back out of attending. The man then opens up the invitation to those no one expected to ever invite.

The purpose of the parable is to help the listener to understand that God has invited everyone to follow him and actively be a part of his Kingdom.

In today’s sermon, Jesus enters Jerusalem in what has become known as the Triumphal Entry which initiates Jesus last week on earth before his crucifixion. The people celebrated his arrival into Jerusalem but they had their own expectations of what his arrival would mean.

There’s a real battle between the “Whatever’s” that happen in our lives, and God’s promises – “You will be given everything you need....” Stepping into that battle – we’re reminded of the Gospel – the story of Jesus. Remembering that story – remembering God’s unconditional love for us – we’re challenged to focus on our mission – Loving God and loving our neighbor.

Broken. No one enjoys broken things around the house. Broken appliances. Broken toys. Broken furniture.  When things become broken, you have two options: discard the item never to be bothered by it again or constantly struggle dealing with an undesirable situation.

Objects around the house are not the only thing broken. Behind the door of any home are broken relationships between spouses, siblings, adult children and extended family. Each are faced with the same options: discard or constantly struggle. Jesus modeled a better solution! It involves more than looking the other way or even offering an apology. Jesus’ way involves moving towards the other person.

In today’s sermon, we will be discovering that reconciling begins with examining oneself first.
