Following Jesus is an invitation into vulnerability. We’re tempted to avoid any sense of vulnerability so that we’re not seen as weak, but Jesus, the strongest person of all time, regularly modeled vulnerability throughout His life and ministry.

By feeding the 4,000, Jesus showed us how to say yes to compassion. Never just a feeling, compassion is an internal reaction that leads to external action. Jesus’ compassion was followed by action. We are to live lives marked by active compassion.

Though His time had endless demands, Jesus modeled the importance of rest. Our culture is obsessed with busyness, but sacrificing rest means ignoring His example. Jesus doesn’t invite us into laziness, but He does invite into a regular, quiet rhythm.

When the disciples panicked during a violent storm, Jesus was at peace. He calmed both the sea and their inner fear, telling them to choose faith. Facing our own storms, Jesus tells us, “Choose faith in Me, and a sense of calm will eventually come.”
