Before having a heart valve replaced Kay Ludlow experienced shortness of breath so severe she couldn't walk more than a short distance or blow out a candle. She wasn't even well enough to undergo open heart surgery.
The interprofessional team at Southlake's Regional Cardiac Care Program however has a solution. Southlake is one of on a handful of community-based hospitals to offer an innovative, minimally invasive, procedure called Trans Aortic Valve Implantation, TAVI for short. Instead of a traditional open heart valve replacement the Southlake team replaced her valve through several small incisions.
Kay returned to Southlake to celebrate her 90th birthday and the new lease on life that Southlake has given her, blowing out the candles on her cake to show how much her life had improved.
