Our final Enneagram Biblical example is the infamous Jonah who sought to “avoid” as the characteristic that shows up in various ways through the drama of his life and faith. He didn’t want to upset the applecart and yet this brought him to desperate means to save his own life and that of everyone around him. Maybe not the type that is most attractive to you – and avoiding sea voyages might be wise!

John the Baptist was a good example of the type 8 in the enneagram. His actual calling was to be “against” as a prophet. These types of personality are often characterized by speaking out against what they perceive to be wrong. As they understand themselves they can tune and tone their presence and input with positive results for all.

Ecclesiastes 2

King Solomon was an example of the 7th enneagram type – the need to avoid pain. The book of Ecclesiastes is generally assigned to Solomon although he is not named. Kohelet is the self named author and reports his exploits and adventures in trying to find a life that avoids pain. This realist account seems all the more true in today’s world. Let’s see what he experienced.

Ruth 1.16-22

Do you enjoy a great love story? Tucked away in the Old Testament is the love story of Ruth. Both Ruth and her mother in law are examples of this enneagram type. Their loyalty in relationships exposes one of the areas in which this characteristic is found. Let's enjoy their story.

Luke 1.1-4

Do you need to "see for yourself" before you believe what someone else tells you? The enneagram type 5 is exemplified by a few Bible characters, notably Thomas and Luke. Thomas said almost exactly the very thing: "unless I can touch and see" I won't believe. But Luke (a doctor?) has the diligence to sort through records and reports in order to present a convincing case. Let's see how he presents his writing project that we read as part of the New Testament.

One of my favourite musicals is “Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat” where the dramatic life of a special person is featured. What makes you “you?” is a healthy question to try to answer and the way each of us accepts, resists or avoids our special characteristics can become the narrative of our life. Let’s see how that worked out in Joseph’s story.

Type three of the enneagram is the need to succeed. In the bible Jacob is an example of this type. In his book The Enneagram – A Christian Perspective Richard Rohr says “Scarcely any biblical figure can be so unequivocally assigned to an Enneagram type as Jacob can.” He struggles with God and with man using every available trick. What are the ups and downs of this personality?

We are going to look at several well known Bible characters and learn about the contributions their strengths make to their unique stories as well as how their shadow sides proved to be blind spots for them. Perhaps you’ll see yourself in some of the stories and even understand what makes some others tick. We’ll start with the Apostle Paul and allow his uniqueness in his particular box to guide us on the right path and avoid the boxiness of his still imperfect persona.
