Having been relieved of duty in the Philistine war against the Israelites, David and his men return home. Yet, when they arrive, Ziklag is burned and their families have been taken captive by the Amalekites. At this low point, David looks to God for strength. We pray this is greatly encouraging to you.

The downfall of King Saul has been a running theme since he was introduced in this book. This chapter is no exception. In a time of need, Saul refuses to repent and turn to God in faith. As Saul continues to try and kill David, David grows more and more concerned for his safety. In this passage, David flees to the Philistines for safety. In the previous lesson, we learned of David's interaction with a fool named Nabal. In this lesson, we find David to be repentant of his desire to kill Nabal because of his insulting of David. However, you may be surprised whom God chose to use to get that message to David.

Saul has continually attempted to kill David. He will continue in the coming chapters. However, in the passage before us today, it is David that has Saul in his grips. The way he deals with Saul is far different than the way Saul has dealt with him. David's actions are clearly those of a Spirit-enabled believer. We pray David's example is greatly beneficial to you.
