Israel's psalms served as their songs of worship, directed toward their covenant God and His purposes, and grounded in their identity as His covenant children. Thus the psalms address all of the dimensions and struggles of Israel's sonship, including the people's yearning for the day when they would finally fulfill their sonship and its vocation. Israel's great longing was to become Israel indeed- son, servant, disciple and witness for the sake of the whole world. And the Psalter reflects God's promise that this outcome would be realized in and through one particular Israelite - a regal son of David appointed to reconcile and reunite covenant Father and son and gather in all the earth's peoples- a Priest-King and true Image-Son.

The day was coming when Israel would fulfill its election and vocation as son of God on behalf of the world, but only as the world experienced a great and decisive act of divine judgment.
