Following his exhortation, the writer continued to demonstrate to his readers Jesus' superiority over the angels. This instruction continues the same theme of Jesus' lordship, but with a more explicit emphasis on His humanness. He is enthroned at God's right hand as True Man.

The first four verses of chapter two contain the first exhortation in the epistle. This exhortation draws on his preceding instruction concerning Jesus' superiority over the angels, and it has the form of a warning. Specifically, the writer warned his readers about the danger of drifting away from the Lord through neglect of their salvation.

-Jesus is the reason for the season- is a common Christmas slogan, and most Christians understand this in terms of the incarnation of the Son of God, and not merely the birth of a remarkable human being. But the true and full significance of the incarnation isn't so readily understood. This message considers that issue, but from a vantage point that might appear strange, namely Jesus' answer to His disciples when they asked Him to teach them to pray.

This final section of chapter one continues the overall argument that Jesus is superior to the angels because He is the promised messianic ruler, whose lordship and dominion they serve. But the writer shifted the emphasis slightly from Jesus' status as God's righteous King, to the absolute and enduring triumph of His rule.

The writer's next concern was to show Jesus' superiority over the angels by virtue of being God's righteous King - the regal Son that Yahweh promised to David- the Son in whom He would establish His righteous and everlasting rule over all things.

The writer's first citations demonstrating Jesus' superiority over the angels emphasize His sonship as God's ordained, begotten Son-King. The next one advanced his argument by highlighting the tangible manifestation of this sonship- Jesus, the Father's begotten Son, was brought into the world as His firstborn.

The writer began his consideration of Jesus' supremacy by noting his relation to God's angels. His thesis was that Jesus has become better than the angels, even as He has obtained the inheritance of a better name, and he went on to explain his meaning by showing from Israel's Scriptures that Jesus is the begotten Son. This message examines that argument and the writer's meaning.

The writer's goal in his epistle was to encourage his readers by reminding them of who this Jesus is that they'd embraced, what He'd accomplished and inaugurated, and what it means to be part of His New Covenant people. His approach was to demonstrate Jesus' supremacy over all the things that were critical to Israel's life with God, one dimension of which was the ministration of angels.
