Psalm 121 is a great comfort to the people of God. The Lord is our keeper, holding His people fast by the power of His right hand. For what do you depend on for righteousness? Do you trust in your ability to sin differently than your neighbor? Do you take special pride in your unblemished church attendance record? Perhaps you trust in some emotional experience you once had years ago. Here is the truth of it: all of these things are worthless, miserable physicians for the soul in need of true righteousness, true life.

Christ paid ever so dearly to deliver His people from the penalty of sin. In light of God's matchless grace demonstrated to His elect in Christ, believers should celebrate the freedom to cultivate acceptable works by faith while striving against sin, detesting it, longing for the day when sin shall be no more! By God's grace, we must be reminded: "we are not our own. We've been bought with a price. Therefore, let us glorify God with our bodies."

Given the awful sin debt from which Christ gloriously delivered us, believers

must humbly forbear and forgive one another. We cannot forget that while

we stand “washed, sanctified, and justified by the name of Jesus Christ,”

others guilty of the very same sins will be eternally cast out in the fierce

wrath of God’s judgment. Since salvation is entirely of God’s good pleasure

and grace, there is no room for boasting, pride, envy, or striving against our

brothers and sisters. Has a brother done wrong by you? Don’t retaliate. Don’t

take it to the streets. The Apostle Paul replies, “Why not rather suffer

wrong?”

TRUTH IN FOCUS:

Every church fellowship has a responsibility to celebrate Christ, to worship God and proclaim Christ’s Gospel, in sincerity and truth. When a brother enters into open rebellion against Christ’s truth by arrogantly celebrating sinfulness, the church faces a sobering task: disfellowship. Yet this separation from fellowship is motivated by the prayerful expectation that God will deal with the erring brother and restore him in His good time.

Believers can not attain righteousness through law-keeping or any other so-called righteous work. Our righteousness, our right standing with God, comes only from the shed blood of Christ, His death satisfying God’s wrath on our account. Sin is righteously put away by the sinless death of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this way, God is just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Christ Jesus is the Good Shepherd who tends to His sheep, the church. Through all of life, the ups and the downs, the mountain tops as well as the valleys, Christ will lead His people in the paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake. Even in the dark throws of death, the sheep know that Christ the Shepherd is the ever-present comfort, the Light which vanquishes the darkness. And in this peace and assurance, we walk toward eternity knowing that we will one day fellowship with the Lord forever.
