My favorite birding video from 2022: a cooperative Winter Wren (Troglodytes hiemalis) at Afton State Park in Minnesota. Normally this species is reclusive and constantly on the move, but this one stuck around close enough to the trail, bopping up and down, curious at our presence long enough for me to grab some video. This was taken November 20, 2022, with snow on the ground but still open to hiking (not enough to groom for skiing).
Video shot on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 ultra-zoom that I carry with me on our hiking adventures for incidental encounters such as this. Audio (such as it is) via the onboard microphone. These wrens have a wonderful song, a long series of short, jumbled notes, but this one was silent.

A trio foraging together on the shore of Lake Superior near Ontonagon, Michigan in October 2020: Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris), Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus), and Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis). Memorable for how three individuals, each of different species, stuck together so consistently while working up and down the beach.

Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200, including onboard mic for audio (which is just the sound of waves on the beach).

Birding with friend and author Ursula Vernon in southern Arizona, we finally encountered a (the) Elegant Trogon in Madera Canyon after a couple previous attempts that same trip. In this video, the bird has caught a spiny caterpillar, which it proceeds to bash on a branch (presumably to remove some of the spines) before eating. Jeff and Ursula provide commentary.

Recorded 17 March, 2018 on the trail below the Whitehouse picnic area. Traffic noises are from the (surprisingly busy) S Madera Canyon Road, out of sight, but not out of hearing behind us. Video and onboard audio recorded on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200. Thanks to Jeff for assistance with audio cleanup & balancing!

Black-backed woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) that visited our cabin at the Rockwood Lodge on the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota (edge of Poplar Lake and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness). This is a boreal species that we don't regularly see when we're up in the area. Not great video, but still notable for us. The all-black head (lack of yellow on forehead) makes this a female.
She started out near the cabin bird feeder (though didn't visit the feeder, that we saw) and worked up the hill to the dead spruce that you see her working in these video clips.

Managed to get some shakycam video and audio of a Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) singing just outside the cabin at the Rockwood Lodge & Outfitter. Normally they're a distant nasal speck, but this one was happy to sing up close for me.
Video and audio (such as it is) via the usual Panasonic Lumix.

Dickcissel (Spiza americana) are known as "nomadic nesters" of the North American grasslands. We've had them around the last couple of years, but they seem to like showing up late in the nesting season, and then suddenly start singing everywhere late-June/early-July. The male was singing in the north prairie of Afton State Park, Minnesota on June 30, 2023. Also audible in recording, Indigo Bunting and Field Sparrow.
Captured on my Panasonic Lumix, including onboard audio.

Black and White Warbler doing its thing, pretending to be a Nuthatch, searching for food on the side of a tree. Hand-held video on my old Panasonic Lumix. Panting and whining in the audio background from our bored huskies wanting to continue the hike.

A very cooperative Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii) paused in migration right outside my window long enough for me to capture a bit of nice close video and audio. This is a species that breeds in the boreal forests to the north, and is a brief visitor to my part of Minnesota during migration. This is a "yard bird" for me! (First documented sighting in our yard.)
Apologies for the traffic and household noises in the background.
