One of President Trump’s most important legacies may be the U.S. Space Force, whose establishment he embraced yesterday.

The need for what would be a new, sixth military service arises from the fact that the “high frontier” of space is increasingly vital to both our national security and to our economy, and even our way of life.  Actual and potential adversaries have long recognized that reality.  Worse, they have been systematically acquiring anti-satellite and space control technologies capable of threatening our dominance over space and even our access to it.

For America’s Space Force to be able to deter the use of such weapons against us, let alone defeat them if need be, far more than a new command structure is required.  A mandate for U.S. space dominance and the strategy and actual capabilities needed to realize it must be forthcoming, too.
