This is a special Mission Log episode and a continuation of the Design Science Synarchy Mission series (Stephen Bau, Mark Smith… Veronica Anderson).

Veronica Anderson is a member of the Design Science Studio and also a member of the Design Science Synarchy mission. The Synarchy was created to support the founders of the DSS and synarchy is a form of join-governance.

I open the show by inviting Veronica to lead a centering meditation, a practice that has been a part of Design Science Studio meetings and was a welcome addition to the latest Space Camp. Veronica studied Zen Buddhism for over 15 years, and was a student of the late Thich Nhat Hanh.

As an architect, Veronica notes that only 10% or 15% of architects are women. She wonders how that influences our built environments and if, in turn that might be influence how we collectively think, feel and act? In her work she aims to design structures that work in partnership with nature. “I was studying sustainability in architecture school, and they're teaching us that this was an alternative to development practices. And I thought, that's crazy. Why would we do anything that's not sustainable? How could we perpetuate something that we know to be unsustainable and detrimental?”

Her project submitted to the Design Science Studio called Home Dash aims to provide a platform to see Earth’s heartbeat so that people can collaboratively design regenerative global systems, help communities and their makers optimize local actions for maximum positive impact, in climate action and sustainable development. (This reminds me a lot of The Flywheel Project.)

We also talk about how our measurement of time has been a tool of colonialization fueling trends like hyper-productivity. Veronica shares a little about living in Costa Rica, and about the healing process she works with calls “ensoulment.” (A bonus episode called Ensoulment on my other podcast, The Language of Creativity).

Carrie Norton talks with us about her “who luck” in working with Paul Hawkin, author of Drawdown and The Ecology of Commerce who taught at one of her company’s first ever Green Business Basecamps and has been an inspiration to so much of her work. A seasoned impact entrepreneur, investor, and consultant, Carrie spent many years in the sustainable energy tech sector, including participating with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 1998, being in senior management at Garage.com and IdeaLab, and training entrepreneurs on sustainable business. She is also is the co-founder of the Sustainable Business Council of Los Angeles.

Her project is still in the beginning phases and is looking for collaborators. The Flywheel project aims to create a free and transparent global registry for verified carbon-reduction projects that correspond to the Drawdown solutions, a tool for collating, illustrating and navigating across our collective progress toward ecosystem regeneration through carbon reduction activities, a platform to match capital to viable projects, and an inspiring vehicle for citizen engagement through education and investment opportunities.

We talk about her ideas have grown and evolved over the years along with understanding the leap from Sustainable to Regenerative.

“We need both,” Carrie says. We also talk about some of her other future initiatives, Regen Learn and Global Regenerative Finance Initiative and the importance of self-honesty of regularly stepping back and asking ourselves “are we on the right path?”

Mark Smith was given a very unique vantage point when networking technology like email was emerging in the 1970s.

Stephen and a small group of members of the DSS formed the Design Science Synarchy to support the founders of the Design Science Studio, then just when things seemed to be ramping up, a devastating car crash brought everything to a grinding halt. With all of the founders in the hospital, members of the Synarchy grappled with how they could fill in the gap of leadership conscientiously and provide support in the midst of the trauma. So instead an acceleration toward a third cohort there came an acute understanding that “Slowing down, resting and healing is our gift to the world.”

We talk about the Synarchy, the arts, and community verses hierarchy, as well as Stephen's brilliant circular calendar he designed and why he chose to name his latest blog The Apocrypha on Substack. Stephen is a prolific writer, a designer and design mentor, and has been working tirelessly to understand the depth of R. Buckminster Fuller's quote "Love is metaphysical gravity."

Today I interview outgoing BFI chief of staff Felicia Chavez about her experience participating in her first Trimtab Spacecamp and the mission she hosted to clarify the vision of the Cooperating Manual for Spaceship Earth (https://spaceshipearth.live) which aims to be “A comprehensive and creatively taxonomized wiki cataloguing our collective intelligence around societal transformation toward cooperation.”

Curating a diversity of resources, articles, media, frameworks, case studies and tools, the Cooperating Manual is a curated database linking to many resources and projects that align with the ideals of helping humanity step into mutual cooperation, aid, equity, and mutual benefit. The Cooperating Manual is a reference to R. Buckminster Fuller’s book The Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth, and bears similarities to the idea of the Whole Earth Catalog.

But does it work? Felicia and her team grappled with this important question, as well as addressing questions of message effectiveness, website usability, current platform limitations, and well, who goes through and curates all those entries?

Felicia has her PhD in Philosophy, a Green MBA, and just published a book called “Dear Marin: Can Marin County reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 2030? A Systems-Thinking Perspective.” We talk about the underlying drivers that motivate a system and how what a system does is often not what people think it does. We talk about how many systems we think are optimized to maximize profit may actually be optimized to increase the feeling of certainty. What is so alluring about the illusion of certainty? And how a more wholistic perspective help us design better systems.

An architect with a love for art discusses a return to "passive cooling technology" based on ancient techniques, how to build using "whole systems thinking," and how Linear Renaissance Perspective (the mode of drawing that western culture has accepted as an objective truth) took over urban design and has created a mode of thinking that has separated us from nature.

Carl Welty has a Masters in Architecture from Yale and a Bachelors from Cal Poly, San Louis Obispo. His company, Carl Welty Architects focuses on creating regenerative designs that are well-suited to their settings. Solar-oriented design, or passive solar design, produces buildings that are at least 50% more efficient than normal baseline buildings. This simple and timeless principle starts with reliable cycles provided by nature. Globally the energy consumed for air conditioning is responsible for 8% of greenhouse emissions and the leaking of refrigerants contribute another 7.8% of greenhouse gas emissions. The demand for air conditioning is project to increase six times by 2050 and the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the century.

The mission Nature-Based Zero Energy Air-Conditioning seeks prove that you can build sustainably AND cost effectively. Carl seeks to collaborate with others to refine the vision, create a step-by-step business plan, and find funding and projects to implement these ideas. Carl says "I have come to the conclusion that by working in with nature as opposed to relying on machines and advanced engineering we can design buildings and communities that are more energy efficient, more resilient, without increasing construction costs. Too often people think that green design costs more - I can provide many examples contrary to this idea... For me demonstrating that sustainable design can be achieved for the same price as conventional design is critical. We are not going to save our place on this Blue Marble if sustainable design is a luxury that only the top 10% can afford."

Della Burford’s first book was published in 1977 and that same year she happened to hear Buckminster Fuller speak for the first time. It was such a profound experience she dedicated her life and her career to the idea that “You are more than yourself.”

Since then she has released many books of stories and artwork for children which have also been adapted for the theater. Her book “Earth Action (show your love for the earth)” is an adaptation of her book “Magical Earth Secrets,” and has been the focus of a mission in two Space Camps. In her latest mission she was able to include things she learned from Brian Von Herzen on ocean permaculture into an exercise in the book.

Incorporating both the medicine wheel and the four directions, the story follows an eagle-child named Rainbow Wings who becomes ill after drinking water from a polluted lake and meets a Wise One, who instructs the child to travel through the seasons in order to find the little people of the four directions in order to heal. These little people teach the child magical words called the “Magical Earth Secrets.” Throughout the story, the book teaches regenerative thinking and practices that help the earth through exercises and wheels that teach the cycles of nature like seasons, energy, water, waste, food, light, and change.

Della is a very gentle soul, a prolific artist and a participant in the Design Science Studio. Her first book “Journey to Dodoland” has been turned into a website and a world in Topia. She believes that art can change the world and encourages everyone to be creative. Steve and Della talk about the use of color in her art and understanding the concept of energy-centers of the body, how the elements in nature want to be in balance and Della also shares about the World Energy Game she helped create. A prolific dreamer, Della has been painting her dreams as “Dream Wheels” each year for the last 49 years, which she has also published in a book. Della also studies “dream yoga” with Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and worked with a dream shaman who tutored with Carl Jung. Steve and Della talk about the “collective dream” and how important it is to envision a future where there is cooperation. Della says “It is very important to manifest our dreams.”

A former resident of Arcosanti discusses ideas about reclaiming spaces both in suburbia and the popular rise in people moving to "community homesteads" in the country.

Julian Lauzzana bought a property in rural Michigan in 2011 and has since turned it into an active homestead through Earthen Heart, LLC. We discuss the joys and challenges of communal spaces in realistic detail. We also talk about food growing initiatives and how it's virtually impossible to tackle every problem at once. The social dynamics extend to online spaces as well, and we need a better mapping of how these work and ALSO we need to find a way to glean wisdom from those who are NOT using digital tools to communicate and to share and proliferate this wisdom in our online tools.

Finally, Julian shares his notion of the need to do away with idealogical monoculture, in that "Anywhere can be transformed, it doesn't have to be in an Archology or in a community homestead. The point is to start talking to each other and being, making space for different opinions.We're not gonna agree about everything. And if we did, that'd be a different project... maybe the Androids That Are All Programmed the Same, Project. Project Earth is diversity."

Lauren Minis is the director of Regeneration Pollination, who’s monthly networking events help bring together people seeking to make regenerative change for the world.

Her mission is called A Regenerative Financial Model for Global Weaving. Recognizing the problem of volunteer burnout, her mission seeks to explore a new financial model to help Regeneration Pollination reach ongoing financial sustainability.

We speak about The 8 Forms of Capital, an essay by Ethan Roland Soloviev (http://www.appleseedpermaculture.com/8-forms-of-capital/) who asserts that looking at capital merely from a financial perspective completely limits our awareness of the many kinds of value that can be exchanged, including Social Capital, Material Capital, Financial Capital, Living Capital or Natural Capital (ie. plants in permaculture), Experiential (Human) Capital, Cultural Capital and Spiritual Capital. We touch on the problem of “Siloing,” where multiple groups are working on the same things but do not know about each other’s work and ways to better connect and weave. We also speak about the value of networking, the gift of adding value when networking and Lauren’s motto that “Opportunities are just a conversation away.” Finally we talk about the need to build bridges and not just preach to the choir in order to truly build a world that works for 100% of life.
