Welcome to the rock history class you actually want to take!

In this installment, Mike and Michael journey from the cutting edge of the global underground to the crushing, progressive depths of the Atlantic Ocean and the soulful stadium lights of the 1980s.

We kick things off with The Art of Discovery, our mission to find your next musical obsession. Here’s what we have for you this time:

• Internal Descent (Arizona)
• Harsh Language (United Kingdom)
• Monosphere (Germany)

Next, we dive into our main topic: Mastodon’s 2004 masterpiece, Leviathan. We explore a record that defined modern progressive metal, from the "trippy," psychedelic vibes of the opening tracks to the monstrously heavy interlocking riffs of Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher. We break down the Neil Peart-like precision of Brann Dailor’s drumming and the growled, shared vocal duties of Troy Sanders. We trace the band's movement from the 13-minute cinematic journey of "Hearts Alive" into the somber, respectful "closing-credits" vulnerability of "Joseph Merrick," showing how a concept album about a legendary whale became a timeless tribute to resilience.

Finally, we head into Michael’s Journey to discuss Tesla’s 1989 powerhouse anthem, "Love Song." We uncover the secret of the "Love Dove" acoustic intro, the "accidental" heartbreak that inspired the song’s soulful blues-rock grit, and how this stadium-sized classic provides an uplifting, emotional message.

Press play to join the journey from the dark, heavy-metal depths of the deep sea to the soulful, neon-lit anthems of the late 80s!
