John Pistacchio, Founder and Head Chef of Ab Whisperer, embarked on his journey to health and entrepreneurship following an unexpected setback: a broken hand. Growing up as an athlete dedicated to competitive volleyball and weightlifting, John pursued a degree in exercise physiology and sports nutrition at William Paterson University. However, in 2015, a fall that fractured his scaphoid derailed his fitness routine, leading to a sedentary lifestyle and significant weight gain.
John Pistacchio's journey began at 15 when he started working out, but a hand injury temporarily sidelined him, leading to a significant weight gain of 60 pounds over the course of a year. Determined to make a change, John dedicated himself to returning to an active lifestyle, teaching himself to cook to lose over 80 pounds. He initially only prepared meals for himself, but his culinary skills quickly expanded to feeding up to 40 people. Friends soon began requesting his help, leading him to co-found "Portioned" with a friend. Over time, he was preparing 300 meals a week. With his business, John catered to high-level athletes, providing meals for Rutgers' football, basketball, and lacrosse teams, Villanova men's basketball teams, and Atlantic Health Systems hospitals.
When the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 forced Portioned to close, John found a new path in partnership with his wife, Elise, who had gained certifications in personal training and nutrition. Together, they relaunched as the original "Ab Whisperer," preparing and delivering meals with relentless dedication, ultimately fulfilling over 10,000 orders and 150,000 meals.
In this Speak Life episode, John shares his story in full for the first time.
