Join us for a conversation with College of Charleston alumnus Sam Norton, founder of Heron Farms in Charleston, S.C. Billed as the world’s first vertical indoor saltwater farm, the company grows sea beans, a healthy, plant-based salt alternative. Norton shares his fascinating journey from plucking sea beans in Lowcountry marshes as a child to studying them for a graduate research project to growing them year-round in an indoor facility. The plants, which Norton says “taste like the ocean,” have become popular with some of Charleston’s award-winning chefs, who use them as a salt substitute in their dishes.

Author and journalist Brian Hicks discusses his book “In Darkest South Carolina: J. Waties Waring and the Secret Plan That Sparked a Civil Rights Movement.” Taking listeners on a trip around Charleston, South Carolina, Hicks recounts the stories and pivotal locations that marked Waring's progression from privileged member of Charleston's white establishment to his years as a student at the College of Charleston to his roller coaster career as a federal judge. Waring put his and his family's life at risk by working from inside the judicial system to bend the law in favor of equality for African Americans and helped lay the groundwork for the 1954 landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education.
