This episode is a Halloween Special. First in the "Take Five" segment Timothy visits five songs that have always seemed a bit creepy, but weren't necessarily meant to be scary tracks. Then we travel down the road to Haddonfield, IL for a brief breakdown of the Halloween (1978), Halloween II, Halloween III, Halloween IV and Halloween (2018) sound tracks. Timothy discuses why they are iconic, the sometimes subtle sometimes spectacular differences between the soundtracks, and what makes John Carpenter an influential musician (let alone film maker).
In this episode of Speaking of Nothing Timothy discusses The Replacment's new "Dead Man's Pop" release and Wilco's new album. As well as a Take 5 full of Fall song recommendations for your Autumn playlists.
It's been a long busy summer. Fall is fast approaching, and as the seasons shift Timothy reflects on the tracks that helped him stay sane. From Ferret Bueller to Sidney Gish to The Hold Steady, here is a great big music recommendation episode. Featuring a special (and super nerdy) Taylor Swift "Take Five."
Kelly Olsen, Allegra Anka and Augusta Koch made up the three members of a band called Cayetana who called it a wrap this past weekend. Cayetana was a band that my friends and I stumbled upon one day while going to a local punk show at our hometown venue. This was an experience that would prove to be life altering in many positive ways. Cayetana has been inspiration in the dark. This group wrote songs that have come to define certain moments of our lives and will continue to forever do so. While it is sad to see them part ways for other projects and pathways, we are reminded that we still have the music and all things must pass eventually. This podcast episode is a brief telling of some of the adventures we've had either going to see Cayetana perform, or hearing their music in our everyday moments. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to this band, for existing and always doing their own unique thing.
Episode includes a brief "Take Five" and a lengthy discussion about every Cayetana show we have attended.
After a long hiatus Speaking of Nothing returns with the next and first guest of all time, Mason "Jar Fish" Herring. In a long and barley cut interview, listen to Mason and Timothy dish out what five things a venue needs to go from excellent to extraordinary. Everything is on the table, from shitty bathrooms to venues that don't allow re-entry. PLUS "New Disco" from The National, Wilco, and The Boss. Listen here!
Paul McCartney came to the Quad Cities and you can bet your bottom that Timothy was there. Today's episode features Timothy and Rachel Masch discussing their Paul McCartney concert experience, and why the Moline show differed from previous McCartney concerts the two have witnessed. PLUS: The top 5 Beatles solo LP's in a special "Take 5" and "New Disco" from Julien Baker, Silversun Pickups, and the QC instrumental guitar band Igneous. Check it out right this very second.
In this weeks episode, Timothy goes on some kind of convoluted rant about how festivals tend to be a waste of big money for painful rewards, while simultaneously talking about his excitement for Riot Fest's 15th Anniversary lineup. A special Riot Fest themed "Take Five" is in order. PLUS: "New Disco" from Aging, Pulsing, and The Smokey Honey Blues Band. Check it out now!
Speaking of Nothing is back after a brief hiatus, and what better way to come back than by telling you which fabulous tunes you should give a spin! This week I skip the lectures and the "Take Fives" in favor of an extended "New Disco" featuring new tracks from Charly Bliss, Coasting, and Guided By Voices to name a few. Check it out, right here wherever it is you listen to Speaking of Nothing. Thanks!
On this weeks episode of Speaking of Nothing, top five Mom Rock bands! Also "New Disco" from The Mountain Goats and SOAK, and a surprise visit from a very special guest!
