On episode 172, we welcomed Stan Hays to the show! Stan Hays is the co-founder and CEO of Operation BBQ Relief (OBR), an organization dedicated to providing hot meals to communities affected by natural disasters. Since its inception, OBR has served millions of meals to disaster victims, first responders, and volunteers12. He was recognized as one of CNN’s Top 10 Heroes of 2017, started this initiative after the devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri, in 20113. 

Operation BBQ Relief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in May 2011 in response to a need for tornado relief efforts in Joplin, Missouri. Competitive pitmasters from nine different states answered the call to feed displaced families and first responders. Together, they were able to serve over 120,000 meals in a 13-day period. This experience of building a network to feed individuals in need has been the inspiration for Operation BBQ Relief. To date, Operation BBQ Relief has provided over 11 million meals throughout the United States and internationally following natural disasters, COVID-19 response, and through The Always Serving Project, benefiting the homeless, first responders, veterans and members of the military.

In our discussion we cover how he began his BBQ career, what it means to be a pit master and what it takes to compete in competitions, the events of the Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011 and why that sprung him to react the way it did, creating Operation BBQ Relief, what it takes to run and maintain OBR, why food is something that brings everyone together, working with the military and Gold Star families, and so much more!

For episode 170, we welcomed Knocko Nolan to the show. Knocko has served on two of the country’s largest and finest police departments, NYPD and LAPD. While on patrol, Knocko worked Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles including Skid Row.

In his nearly three decades of service, Knocko has been on a wide range of units including Narcotics, Vice, the Career Criminal Unit where he tracked and investigated violent repeat offenders; the infamous anti-gang unit CRASH where he collected intelligence on street and prison gangs and participated in undercover, reverse-sting operations; a Special Victims squad that investigated assaults and sex crimes perpetrated against children; and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in which he held a Top Secret government clearance and investigated international terrorist groups, a role he chose after 9/11. 

In our discussion we talked about what led him to his career in law enforcement, working in both the NYPD and LAPD and how those departments were similar, how law enforcement has changed over the years, how to police departments need to recruit today, his appearence on the Netflix documentary, "Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel", the importance of having a partner like Stacey in his life, rolling on the jiu jitsu mats with former Spear Talk guest, Mike Kroeger (Nickelback), punk rock and 80s movies, and so much more.

For episode 169, we welcomed Chef Alex Belew to the show. Chef Alex Belew won Season 21 of "Hell's Kitchen," which aired from September 2022 to February 2023. Chef Alex Belew was head chef of Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen restaurant at Caesar's Atlantic City. Alex obtained his Culinary Arts degree at The Art Institute of Tennessee in Nashville, where he eventually went on to establish his own catering company, Alex Belew Catering, before becoming a high school cooking instructor. He then opened his first restaurant in 2018 after winning several awards for his cooking.
