How do I cope with having a special child?
Being a parent of a child with special needs can be overwhelming, and I have been asked many times whether I regret having a special child. I will be addressing this question honestly, and sharing how my journey with Heavenly has shaped my perspective on parenting and life in general.
I will also be sharing my personal experiences of parenting a child with craniosynostosis, and how we made the difficult decision to go through with cranial vault distraction surgery. The process was challenging, and we had to overcome many obstacles, but I will be discussing how we managed to stay positive and hopeful throughout.

Heavenly underwent a posterior cranial vault distraction surgery to correct craniosynostosis, a condition where the bones in a baby's skull fuse too early, resulting in an abnormal head shape and sometimes affecting brain development. In this episode of "Special Mommy Unfiltered", host Golda Mpoude shares her experience of meeting Heavenly's new medical team for Apert syndrome. After relocating to the United States, Golda had already made arrangements for a pediatrician specialized in Apert syndrome to see Heavenly. The pediatrician connected them to a hospital where they scheduled a consultation with the entire medical team, including a plastic surgeon, neurosurgeon, orthopedic, speech pathologist, and dentist. It was a reassuring experience for Golda to talk to people who understand her daughter's condition and to communicate effectively with medical professionals. Heavenly's Bilateral Syndactyly Surgery: Giving Her the Gift of Better Hand Function
In this episode of the Special Mummy Unfiltered Podcast, I share Heavenly’s experience with her first surgery for bilateral syndactyly. Bilateral syndactyly is a congenital hand condition where the fingers are fused together. This condition can affect a child’s ability to use their hands effectively. In Heavenly’s case, the surgery was necessary to release the fused fingers and allow her to use her hands more efficiently.
I discuss the process leading up to the surgery, the surgery itself, and the recovery process. I also provide information on what bilateral syndactyly is, its causes, and treatment options available.
As a mother, it was a difficult decision to make, but the surgery has proven to be beneficial for Heavenly’s quality of life. Join me as I share Heavenly’s journey with bilateral syndactyly and the positive outcomes of her surgery.
