The spotlight effect is a term used by social psychologists to refer to the tendency we have to overestimate how much other people notice about us. In other words, we tend to think there is a spotlight on us at all times, highlighting all of our mistakes or flaws, for all the world to see.

For people with social anxiety, the spotlight effect can be much worse, to the point that it has an effect on your ability to work or feel comfortable around other people.

It is not uncommon to find yourself feeling embarrassed. However, for people with social anxiety, this feeling can be overemphasized . For example, if you wake up late and go to work with disheveled hair, you may be convinced that everyone is noticing and secretly thinking badly of you. You may blush or try to hide from your coworkers, convinced that they are pitying or mocking you.

One way to work on overcoming the spotlight effect is to test your belief that other people are noticing and evaluating you. To do this, it's helpful to understand a concept identified through research termed the "illusion of transparency," which asserts that people tend to think that their internal state is visible to others when it truly is not. While it may feel as though everyone knows what you are thinking about yourself, in actuality nobody has this ability to read your mind.

When it comes to onam, we all know that it's the most secular Indian festival ever; apart from Malayalees who are listening, how many of you know why Onam is celebrated and how it got its name? In this podcast I will explore some interesting facts about Onam.

What is Onam?

The word originated from the Sanskrit word Shravanam which refers to one of the 27 Nakshatras or constellations.

In South India, Thiru is used for anything which is associated with the Lord Vishnu and it is believed that Thiruvonam is the Nakshatra of Lord Vishnu.

A little history on why Onam is celebrated

Onam is celebrated to honour the home-coming of mythical-demon king Mahabali. Mahabali was known for his kind-hearted nature. He was loved by the people for his justice and fair play that his rule extended beyond earth to heaven and even to hell. He is outside the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahadev.

Apparently the trinity gods became insecure about the popularity of the demon king and so they asked help from Lord Vishnu.

As Mahabali worshipped Lord Vishnu so, Vishnu told the gods that he would help them.

So the great Vishnu, transformed into a poor dwarf brahmin called Vamana and went to Mahabali’s kingdoms, asking for three wishes. He asked Mahabali for property right over a piece of land which measured ‘three paces’. Mahabali agreed to fulfil Vamana’s desire.

Vamana started to grow in size and his first feet covered the earth and second feet covered the sky. For the third feet no place was left, and then Mahabali requested Vamana to place third feet on his head, thus, burying himself into the underworld.

However, by seeing the devotion of Mahabali, lord Vishnu was impressed and told him that he could return to earth once a year to visit his people and his kingdom during Onam. And so, every year during this period the Onam festival is celebrated.

As part of the celebrations, people make the carpet of flowers which is known as ‘Pookolam’ and lay in front of their house to welcome the king Mahabali by a lavish feast called Sadhya.

People wear new clothes, cook delicacies and serve them on Banana leaves with a cup of payasam.

We’re Mad About Madras

The founding day of Madras is thought to be August 22, 1639.

We got the name Chennai just in 1996. Until then it was Madras, accepted to be gotten from Madrasapattinam which is a fishing village north of Fort St. George. An intriguing clarification is that it could have been gotten from a fisherman named Madrasan. We South Indians are as yet being gathered under the expression “Madrasis” which evolved as Madras.

You may know Madras as so many things. For some it’s one of the hottest, most humid, most intolerable cities while for others, it's home, it’s safety and it’s freedom. No matter what you may know Madras for, it is undoubtedly one of the most important cities in India.

Madras, a clamoring city acclaimed for its cultural roots and manufacturing prowess, has something to offer for everybody. Many people know Superstar Rajinikanth, Viswanathan Anand and the Mozart of Madras — A.R.Rahman. Be that as it may, it has significantly more to offer — the Authentic Filter Coffee, the Beautiful Marina Beach, India’s first Bookshop at Higginbothams, Hot and steaming Idlis, the Madras Music Season, Countless sanctuaries, Automobile Industry.

So here is a small token of madness for Madras.
