Some luck for the good guys, as a traffic jam forces the bus to slow down. Annie delivers her first one-liner, much to Sam's annoyance. Jack races up the shoulder, reaching the point where his car is almost parallel to the bus, but his path is blocked by a jack-knifed truck. With no other option, he gets out and runs towards the bus, trying the Annie Maneuver. His attempts are a little too violent though, and ironically Annie tells Sam to leave Jack hanging. Finally, he begins announcing his credentials, with unintended and tragic results.

Jack speeds past Chekov's Tune Man in a vain attempt to catch up to the bus. Unfortunately, morning traffic is light today, and Sam blissfully speeds up. We meet several of our bus passengers that will be featured more prominently in later minutes. Helen extols the virtues of mass transit, and Annie pines for the car she is no longer allowed to drive.

Jack does some aggressive and dangerous driving to try to catch the bus. Annie finds a seat just in front of the world's most annoying passenger, Camer -- I mean, Stephens.

Turns out that the person on the other end of the line is Howard Payne, apparently sitting in a car on the other side of the bus not very far away. Payne complains bitterly about how Jack and Harry foiled his elevator plot, and then promises he will eventually get his money, with interest. He seems to fashion himself as an amateur financial planner. We then get our third Pop Quiz moment of the movie, where Payne outlines the central plot of the bus bomb.

With a few well-placed groans, he realizes that the situation is hopeless. He then hears a ringing payphone (remember those?), and slowly walks over to answer it.
