Episode 014 of the Speed of Life Podcast involves a detailed discussion on coaching the 400 meter sprint event with Coach Mike Hurst.  Mike hails from Sydney, Australia and boasts an impressive record of coaching top athletes in the 400 meter event.  We discuss Coach Hurst’s beginnings as an ambitious and eager coach, taking on some of Australia’s new young sprint talents and how he developed them into some of the world’s top performers.  Mike talks about the challenges of coaching individuals in a very demanding sprint event, as well as preparing them for the world stage, where major events are commonly held during the off-season for Southern hemisphere nations.  We also discuss the advantages of being a global sports journalist and how that role helped him achieve his athletics coaching successes.  

Mike Hurst coached Australian sprinters to qualify for five successive summer Olympic Games from 1980–1996 and one more in 2020. His most successful athletes were Seoul Olympic 400m Finalists Maree Holland (50.24s) and Darren Clark (44.38s), who set NSW State and Australian National Records. Most recently, Hurst coached Rebecca Bennett and Ian Halpin to anchor Australia’s 4x400 relay teams at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.  Hurst also worked as a sportswriter for the News Ltd group of newspapers in Australia, for which he reported in-stadium at the first nine athletics world championships (Helsinki 1983 to Paris 2003), seven Commonwealth Games, and six summer Olympic Games.  He is a former president of the Australian Olympic and Commonwealth Games Writers and Photographers Association and a former vice president of the Association International Presse Sportive (athletics section).

Episode 012 of the Speed of Life Podcast covers the work of Andrew Hauser in the areas of athlete performance and rehabilitation.  Andrew has worked the bulk of his early career in professional sports for various team in Major League Baseball, but has since taken his talents to the private sector, working out of Scottsdale, Arizona and establishing himself as a top practitioner for pro athletes.  We discuss his approach to assessment and treatment, as many of his initial referrals are for injured athletes.  We also talk about the importance of re-establishing basic fitness qualities in injured athletes, more specifically with the aerobic and circulatory systems.  Using advanced technology, Hauser makes sure that no stone is unturned in his process and athletes are more than ready to return to their sport in top condition.  

Andrew Hauser is a leader in the manual therapy, rehab, and training space within professional sports. He previously oversaw the Rehab Department for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as the Performance and Medical Departments for the Atlanta Braves before starting Continuum High Performance. Andrew was one of the first high performance directors in Major League Baseball. He is able to take many tools and complex systems and integrate them into an easily understandable manner that allows athlete’s to gain autonomy and knowledge of their care.

In Episode 011 of the Speed of Life Podcast, we talk performance nutrition with Adam Ross.  Rather than engaging in an over-complex analysis of diet and nutrition strategies, we keep things very basic and fundamental.  Adam discuses some of the common problems he faces with clients on a daily basis, whether it is eliminating processed foods from their diet, identifying key targets for macro-nutrients and determining sounds sources of supplementation.  While it is common for clients to search for the magic-bullet of nutrition that can solve all of their problems, we find out through Adam that often the simple answer is able to provide the best outcomes for most people.  

Adam Ross, RD, is a Registered Dietitian, Sports Nutritionist, and Performance Strategist based in New York.  Searching for ways to improve his athletic performance, Adam began researching nutrition and saw the benefits and pitfalls of trying to change his diet without scientific knowledge or expert support. After playing Division I hockey at Merrimack College and then playing for professional teams affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, Ross followed his interest in nutrition and returned to school to complete a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from Queens College in New York.  Ross worked for several years as a performance nutrition coach at Drive495 training gym in Manhattan before moving to St. John’s University as the campus dietitian, advising their Division I sports teams, other students, and faculty members on nutrition. While there, Ross also supported students navigating everything from eating disorders to the basic challenges of adjusting to college life.  Ross also developed his own private nutrition coaching practice, and in 2018 he began treating patients online. This allowed him to work with a broad spectrum of people, from professional athletes to people looking to try new diets as they got older to improve their energy and longevity.

Episode 008 of the Speed of Life Podcast covers a discussion on the state of US college strength and conditioning through the eyes of Olympic Sports strength coach, Erik Hernandez.  Coach Hernandez has spent the bulk of his career at the University of North Carolina, working primarily with lacrosse, golf and volleyball.  We discuss the changes that Erik has experienced over his tenure at UNC, as well as some important things that have remained consistent in the department as well as with his overall training philosophy.  While many institutions and major sports are experiencing a changing landscape of recruiting, transfers and athlete compensation, Coach Hernandez has managed to control the variables that he can control and provide the best culture, community and support for the athletes under his charge for the duration of their time in college sport.  

Erik Hernandez joined the University of North Carolina Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning staff in August of 2010.  A former UNC intern, Hernandez now serves as the Associate Director for Olympic Sports for the strength and conditioning department. He is responsible for the men’s lacrosse, men’s golf, women’s golf and volleyball teams.  In his time at Carolina he has had the opportunity to oversee several other teams including the women’s lacrosse team during their 2016 and 2022 NCAA Championship seasons.  Before Carolina, Hernandez was a graduate assistant strength coach at the University of Tulsa, working primarily with football and basketball.  Hernandez interned at Arizona State University and Niles North High School, along with serving as a student intern at Loyola University (Chicago).  A 2010 graduate of Loyola, Hernandez competed in the shot put for the track and field team and still holds the school record. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Loyola and his Masters of Education in training and development from N.C. State. Hernandez is CSCS certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds Titleist Performance Institute level 3 fitness certification as well.

There are hundreds of millions of dollars in ‘assets’ on the field or court on any given night and we expect the professional sport organizations to do whatever is necessary to elicit the highest levels of performance, while also preserving the health of these priceless athletes.  Do we have highly qualified doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength coaches, sports psychologists and nutrition specialists supporting these athletes?  A lot of it will depend on the personal standards set by each individual practitioner and their own self-governing rules around accountability and preparedness.  Expecting a team owner, general manager or head coach to adequately screen and evaluate all staff is a tall task.  We talk with Charlie about how he sets his own self-expectations around performance and results, navigating the sometimes chaotic environment of professional sports.
