The church of Sardis was a representation of the denominational church who was more interested in liturgy than relationship with God. Even though they had great form, they allowed deception to gain a foothold. Jesus encouraged them to repent so their name would not be blotted out. They also were the first church to be reprimanded if they didn't repent, they would be thrown into the great tribulation.
