Some call it “speaking the truth with love.” But too often, those words become weapons. In this episode, I explore what happens when the label Christian grows louder than the love it’s meant to embody – when words are used to correct and condemn rather than to comfort or heal.

Drawing from 1 Corinthians 13’s description of love as patient and kind, I reflect on how easily faith can become performance, especially online, where disembodied words carry no relational weight or accountability. Detached from presence, even sacred language can become hollow. We forget that love isn’t proven by winning arguments or policing others, but by how we show up in the messy intimacy of real human lives.

This episode is an invitation to return to love as a way of being – love rooted in relationship, humility, and daily practice. Because love is not a label we wear or a weapon we wield. Love is the way we move through the world.

I’d planned to finish a podcast episode and send it out this morning, but I woke up with this phrase deep in my heart: the truth shall set you free.

With all the intentional disinformation circulating lately, I found myself wondering: what might change if people from all sides prayed for truth — without assuming they already know what that truth is?

Many of you probably believe in the power of prayer, the power of intention, or the cosmic laws of the universe. If enough of us hold a shared intention around truth, perhaps we can help bring more of it to light — and more quickly.

Let us hold the intention for truth to be revealed. May the light of love uncover what has been hidden. May truth spring forth in ways we can’t ignore or avoid. May the veils be removed from my eyes. Let me see what has been hidden. Let me see the truth, and help me share it with others who have ears to hear. And as I awaken, may the veils be removed from all our eyes. May we see together what has long been concealed.

“Thoughts and prayers.” We hear the phrase after every tragedy—school shootings, natural disasters, moments of national grief. It’s meant to convey empathy, but for many it has become shorthand for doing nothing. The words can feel like a dismissal of the deep, complicated work needed to heal a broken world.

In this episode, I explore what prayer really means and whether it “works.” Looking at both research and lived experience, I reflect on how prayer is often misunderstood – not a vending machine dispensing quick answers, but a practice that can lower anxiety, increase resilience, and deepen our connection to meaning and to each other. Prayer may not always change circumstances, but it often changes the pray-er.

At its best, prayer is not an escape from responsibility but a catalyst for compassion and action. We are both the prayer and the pray-er. And when our prayers take root in us – moving through us into acts of courage, presence, and love – they ripple outward, touching lives we may never see, expanding far beyond what we imagine, to grow more love.

At a Nebraska town hall this summer, Congressman Mike Flood tried to defend deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and food assistance by repeating a familiar phrase: “waste, fraud, and abuse.” Instead of applause, his constituents booed and shouted him down. After decades of being told that government programs are riddled with fraud, people suddenly realized those cuts weren’t about distant “undeserving” strangers – they were about their own lives, and the lives of their neighbors.

Why does that phrase resonate so deeply, even when the facts don’t back it up? Part of the answer lies in our wiring. Like the monkeys who revolt when their neighbor gets a grape while they’re stuck with cucumbers, we react strongly to perceived unfairness. That instinct for fairness is part of what keeps communities together, but it can also be manipulated. Stories about individual cheats get repeated until they overshadow the truth: that most fraud comes not from families, but from corporations, hospitals, and insurers.

This episode explores how the story of “waste, fraud, and abuse” distorts our view of fairness, and how a spiritual lens can help us see the whole picture. Fairness is the seed, but love is the fruit. When we move beyond fragments of envy and into the wholeness of love, fairness stops being about guarding cucumbers and grapes. It becomes about ensuring everyone at the table has enough.

When I was growing up, I believed the future was an ever-expanding circle — one that would keep widening to include more voices, more cultures, more perspectives. The stories I loved, from Star Trek to Back to the Future, imagined not only flying cars and warp drive, but a world where humanity worked together across every kind of difference. I thought that kind of inclusion was inevitable.

But lately, the circle seems to be narrowing. Diversity programs are being dismantled. Books are being banned. Laws target people for who they are. These aren’t just political battles over “issues” — they’re struggles over the very boundaries of our shared imagination. When we silence voices, we shrink the field of possibility. And the future we were promised — or maybe the future we promised ourselves — isn’t guaranteed.
