Spiritual Sequel episodes

  • Original State: Gemini Man, Hustlers, Ad Astra, & First Love
The Brothers are forced to admit that Original movies exist and give their take on the recent crop.
-- What is Gemini Man's purpose for existing?
-- Is Ad Astra better on mute?
-- Does the last minute of Hustlers ruin the movie?
If you enjoy conversations about love triangles including you and your future self, or watching a Yakuza absorbing drugs through a gunshot wound, this episode is for you!

  • Joaquin Joker: Outside the Lines
Joker is more than a movie. It's reception, anticipation, and preparation demand the Jansen Brothers, as they connect the dots between Wu Tang, media coverage, a Face/Off following Castor Troy, and the existential question: what makes movies cinematic

  • Shazam! (aka DC's Captain Marvel)
The Brothers wonder aloud if The Rock could actually be a primatologist or security expert at the top of his field with all the time he spends in the gym? With so many movies shooting in Atlanta, why can’t movies take place in Atlanta? Why make a live-action Disney remake, if there’s so much CGI that there’s barely any live action? And Carter analyzes a classic Frosty grift that may have been more benevolent than Frosty realized. They also get around to discussing Shazam! and its connections with the abandoned George Miller Justice League picture, and what 80’s movie it resembles even more than Big.

  • Angel has Fallen (aka Fallen 3)
A sequel that's better than its original (which for this franchise isn't saying much). Also a sequel that doesn't acknowledge previous installments. Well, the Brothers Jansen acknowledge them, including the Cinema Duel between secret service Die Hard knockoffs Olympus has Fallen vs White House Down.
Would Gerry Butler would have made a good James Bond? Is he more American than Scottish?, Are we sure Antoine Fuqua was on set directing this film? Could we create a crossover with The Equalizer?

  • Rambo: Last Blood (aka First Blood Part 5)
Of all the characters in the history of cinema or even culture at large, Rambo is one of the largest. What makes a character so iconic? Is it just their costume? Did Rambo really represent American Exceptionalism or was that a Reagan hijacking?
We saw Last Blood and ask: Why build tunnels underneath your ranch if you aren't smuggling in people across the border? Ending with a Godfather Part 2 pitch to give Last Blood more life, and a pitch for the sequel pitting a De-Aged 80s Stallone vs Old Man Stallone.

  • Rocky (Chapters 1-6)
As two native Philadelphians, this picture punches straight to these brothers' hearts. Covering the great original, its shockingly superior yet underrated sequel, its radical departure for the third chapter, followed by Rocky 4 or as we call it Montage: The Movie. Rocky 5 is a true bummer and we will try to forget it and in the process help you forget, or better yet give you a stern warning to never let your eyes see it. It's like the tape from The Ring. We close with Rocky 6, the one where he fights an actual boxer at 60 plus and somehow it works. Plus he gives an all time speech in that one

  • 47 Meters Down: Nicolas UnCaged (aka 48 Meters Down)
Mayan Temples. Submerged in water. Blind zombie sharks. A Sex in the City character who moves to Mexico to excavate underwater caves, just to get over his feelings for Carrie Bradshaw. That's right. This film has that and more. And the Jansen Brothers are diving into this ambitious (in all the wrong ways) sequel to the surprisingly thrilling Mandy Moore original.

  • John Wick Chapter 3
The Brothers Jansen debate the serious issues. Is Jimmy the Cop afraid of John Wick or just a friend? Are the police paid off or they also assassins in this universe? Do you need cops in an amoral world?
