The beatings, imprisonments, confiscation of property, and cruel executions that the early Church faced didn’t erode their confidence in Christ but rather galvanized it—the more we share in Christ’s sufferings, the more we’ll share in his glory!

We hear this very differently because we don’t face anything like what the early Church did. But Paul isn’t only talking about suffering for the sake of the gospel; any and every kind of suffering we face in this world riddled with sin and its effects is in view here. And though we do our best in 21st century America to block it out, creation tells us all the time that things are not right.

But here's the gospel promise: because of Christ, future glory awaits all of creation. You know it—and creation knows it, too.

Someone who believes in the gospel can say with Paul, “Because of what Jesus has done for me, I love God’s law with all my heart. The promise that my eternal destiny is secure and waiting for me in God’s presence charges me up to live the rest of my days for Jesus now.”

Abraham had a special relationship with God, and at its core was this truth: Abraham believed in God, and God counted Abraham as righteous because of his faith.

The apostle Paul says that all who believe like Abraham are children of Abraham. In fact, this story of Abraham was recorded for our benefit, that we would have assurance that God will deal with us the same way.

The bad news: Your own attempts to make things right are not sufficient to be made right with God. ‌

The good news: Your sins are not too heinous or shameful to be forgiven by God.

There’s no “doing” required of you. This righteousness isn’t your wages, but rather it’s a gift from God to you. If you believe that God does what he says, then Jesus' death paid for your sins, and his resurrection justified you completely.

Just as God told Moses: “I’ve come down to rescue my people from their slavery to Pharaoh. I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people out of Egypt. And when they ask for my name, tell them Yahweh sent you.”

So now Jesus tells the Church: “I came down to rescue my people from the power of sin, death, and the devil. I am sending you to all the nations of the world. You must make disciples across the world. And baptize them into this name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 

What’s the importance of baptism? Why do we need to be baptized into this name? Isn’t it enough to just praise the name?

Thousands of years after that, Moses' desire was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost.

Thousands of years hence, what began then has never stopped, and in the Christian Church Moses’ desire has become reality: All of God’s people are prophets, because the Holy Spirit dwells in all of us.

What Jesus said on the way out is tremendously important for us now while he’s gone.

Last week: “If you believe in me, you’ll be continuing my works. And you’ll even be doing greater works than what I’ve done!”

This week: “The most important thing for you to focus on is that you love me for who I am and what I’ve done for you. If you do that, you’ll gladly keep my commandments. And the Holy Spirit will be present with you to help and comfort you forever!”

Christian, your Lord has not forgotten you in these 2,000 years since his resurrection and ascension. He’s busily preparing a place for you. And because he knows exactly what it’s like to live in this world—to be tempted by sin, to suffer at the hands of others, to be anxious, to feel like you’re hanging on by just a thread, to be frightened by death—Jesus has made provisions for you to know comfort, peace, and truth.

There has never been a better time to be alive. And yet for all of the comforts and conveniences that we are able to enjoy, we still face things in life that make us ask: “Why, God?”

And American Christianity in general — in the land of choices, expediency, and alternate solutions — has not done a very good job in maintaining an element of our Christian heritage that goes all the way back to the prophets who wrote the Scriptures. What I’m speaking of is lament. And lament usually begins with “Why?”

Lamenting isn't fast or easy. But it’s better than growing cold, bitter, and detached.
