Things we run away from and things we run toward both have something in common: they're something outside of us that empowers us and excites us to run. In 1 Timothy 6, the Apostle Paul gives Christians something to both run from and something to run toward. 

What are we supposed to flee? The love of money, because this love is a root of all kinds of evil. 

What are we supposed to pursue? Righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.

Paul calls this endeavor "fighting the good fight of the faith." And how do we accomplish this? By embracing contentment with regard to the things of this life, contentment built on this fact: Jesus Christ has already made us wealthy beyond comprehension.

Ever since the fall from grace (back in the Garden of Eden), creation has not been what it was meant to be. 

But now, in these days between the completed work of Jesus Christ and his return for judgment, what once was and what shall be in the age to come is also blooming into flower here and now. 

And this happens first of all in the church. 

In St. Paul's first letter to Timothy, we see how the completed work of Jesus Christ enables God's men and women to live together in harmony as they lead quiet and dignified lives, praying for all people to be saved --- and all of this pleases God.

The Gospel has been offensive to polite, proper, religious sensibilities since Jesus walked the earth. Jesus welcomes sinners, yes. Jesus shares fellowship with sinners, too!

And more than just sharing fellowship with sinners, Jesus searches for us in our lost place and rejoices when he finds us. All the wealth and splendor of heaven — that is, the life of the Son of God —  is spent for your sake, to purchase you, to redeem you.

And that great cost is not held against you; Jesus rejoices as he carries you, like a lamb on his shoulders. There's no better news could there be than this: The Lord of the Cosmos desperately wants to find us and rescue us from sin, death, and the devil.

In this life, good works are commanded of Christians. But they are not a means by which we earn our salvation or eternal life; Jesus earned both of those for us by his crucifixion and resurrection. 

Hebrews 13 provides a Christian social ethic for believers: practice brotherly love and hospitality, be compassionate to those who are imprisoned or downtrodden, honor the estate of marriage, strive to be content, and remain sincerely devoted to God.  

But we're not responsible for making all this happen in our own lives; the same God who saved us by grace also works within us that which is pleasing to him. The life of the Christian is began, sustained, and perfected all by the grace of God.

The door to everlasting life and salvation stands open, and the Lord Jesus welcomes all who approach. But that door isn't going to stay open forever. In Luke 13, Jesus explains that when that door is shut (on the last day), many will knock and say "Let us in! We went to church and participated in the life of our congregation" and Jesus will say "Depart from me; I never knew you!"

Our assurance of salvation then rests only in this: That we know and trust Jesus as our only hope in life and death, and because of that he knows us and will never cast us out.

Baptism, often something that happens before we are old enough to remember it, is fundamental to the Christian life. So fundamental that we can never get over it, leave it behind, or move on from it. 

Here's why: it's our baptism that joins us to both Christ's death and his resurrection! 

In Colossians 3:1-11, St. Paul tells the Church what our baptism means with regard to Christ's resurrection and ascension: Our life is hidden with Christ in God, and when Jesus returns, then we also will appear with him in glory.

Sometimes believing in Jesus is easy. When "all is as it should be" the truth of the Gospel and all of God's promises to us seems self-evident.

But other times—perhaps most of the time—faith feels like running uphill or swimming against the current. From where do we draw strength to keep running the race set before us?

We find encouragement in the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us, like a crowd of fans at a track meet cheering us on from every direction. And we persevere to the end by setting our eyes on Jesus, who persevered to the end by setting his eyes on us.
