District Judge Tod Deck announced his verdict this afternoon in Woodbury County District Court after weighing the evidence for two months. Nineteen-year-old Walker of Sioux City was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the Jan. 28, 2018, stabbing deaths of 17-year-old Paiten Sullivan, and 18-year-old Felipe Negron Jr., 18, both of Sioux City.

An investigation is underway after train derailment last night in Sioux County. It happened on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe track between Hull and Doon, one mile west of Highway 75 around 8:30. The sheriff’s office says about 26 cars of the 83-car train derailed. They posted drone video of the derailment on their Facebook page . Woodbury County is making strides towards having a new jail. Yesterday, Woodbury County supervisors approved an architecture contract with a firm that will put together a design for the $49.5-million-dollar jail. The county has cited infrastructure and overcrowding issues as reasons for a new building. The county is joining several others around the state that have recently worked to update and expand their facilities. Eight counties have completed new jails or major renovations since 2014. A

Sports gambling in Iowa now has an official start date. The state Racing and Gaming Commission has given 18 casinos the initial go-ahead to start taking bets at Noon on August 15 th , although some may start at a later date. However, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is not on that list.
