It’s time to fight our way through the back catalogue of martial arts films from The Shaw Brothers Studio by taking on The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter. We return to obscure Steven Spielberg this week with The Sugarland Express, a crime dramedy from 1974 which was his first official feature film and first collaboration with John Williams. Ever wondered what it would be like if a dog-frisbee enthusiast is flung into the not so distant future and has boring adventures in a spaceship that sounds like Pee-wee Herman? No? Well, here’s Flight of the Navigator anyways, an 80’s sci-fi that is often looked back on quite fondly, but not so much by this bunch of Welsh chumps who find out its a film of two halves: one half an intriguing, almost David Lynch-for-kids drama and one half annoying, only-for-kids comedy adventure. Watch out for: roaming robot cupboards, lots of 80’s synthetic drum beats, Sarah Jessica Parker flirting with a child, alien sphincter monsters with colds and so much God-damned dog frisbee.

Did they finally make a sequel to Electric Dreams? No, silly, it’s a dialogue-free, French animated movie about a boy and his dog…no wait, a dog and his robot that may be one of the most charming and heart-warming things we have seen in a long time, despite the countless times it keeps tricking us with false narratives and an ending which leaves you with only a vague sense of catharsis. And hey, good luck getting September by Earth, Wind and Fire out of your head, it certainly hasn’t happened for us.

There are a million and one films about dogs, not so many about cats. Maybe it’s because dogs are easier to train and cats are essentially ungovernable, but Hey! does no-one enjoy a challenge anymore? Well, they seemingly did in 1978 when they made The Cat From Outer Space and fair play to them they got pretty decent performance from a cat. It’s just a shame that nothing else in the film got that level of attention or scrutiny. Sam Raimi is usually very comfortable with dark humour, especially with mixing genre elements like slapstick comedy, horror and suspense. So, his movie Crimewave, which is about a dweeb dealing with a murder plot, bumbling hitmen and trying to save and woo the woman he fancies and also written by dark humour maestros the Coen Brothers, really should have been a homerun, but ends up being a spectacular foul ball, with a major emphasis on the foul. What made this such a mess? Studio interreference apparently, but can that truly explain everything wrong with this misfire of a movie? Tune in to find out our answers.

We have differing levels of experience with the filmography of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar here at SFFCH, but none of us have seen what is probably his most well known film, Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a zany, dark comedy about women on the…verge of a…nervous breakdown…yeah.
