Two former guards at the shuttered Alligator Alcatraz detention center face misdemeanor battery charges after allegedly assaulting detainee Rigoberto Rodriguez Arce in January — the first criminal case ever filed over mistreatment at the facility. Both guards, Andre Seenaraine and Stephen Trejos, were arrested in June, just before the center closed, and released on $1,000 bonds. While prosecutors allege physical violence during a tense handcuff-banging incident, defense claims include self-defense and unverified accounts. With no official statements from the contractor or state, the case remains shrouded in ambiguity — but both defendants insist their innocence as legal proceedings unfold.

An 81-year-old Illinois woman, Brenda Daurham, was left homeless and hospitalized after her 40-year home flooded from a burst pipe — an incident her insurer, Allstate, refused to cover under policy exclusions. Facing an $18,000 bill and no place to live, she found unexpected hope when Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry stepped in. Publicly blasting Allstate’s “good hands” slogan on Instagram, Perry pledged to cover the full restoration lien and donate an additional $25,000 to help Daurham rebuild her life — proving that when systems fail, compassion can step up in powerful ways.

The Fed faces a high-stakes dilemma: hike rates amid a surprisingly strong jobs report—or cave to presidential pressure for cuts, risking credibility. With inflation stubbornly above target and midterm elections looming, Chair Kevin Warsh signals he’s waiting for clear signs of cooling prices before acting. President Trump’s fiery threats to halt trade with nations that don’t lower rates add political heat, but solid labor data—including steady unemployment and controlled wage growth—supports a hawkish stance. Next week’s consumer price index could be the make-or-break moment.

A daughter’s mom is relentlessly pressuring her about marriage, career, and kids—calling her boyfriend “unloving” for not proposing and embarrassing her over her jobless status. The daughter deflects with faith and reassurance, but it’s falling flat. Miss Manners agrees the mom’s behavior is cruel, but suggests a new tactic: the daughter should calmly set a boundary by saying, “I’m sorry you don’t like it, but this is what works for us,” then pivot fast. And in a lighter moment, Miss Manners advises thanking a neighbor for a disastrous carrot souffle—and hoping guests can quietly escape before dessert disaster hits.
