A once-threatened 200-acre Thorpe property in Spokane is now headed for public ownership after the state’s Board of Natural Resources reversed course from a developer deal. Fueled by community and environmental opposition, the land will be preserved for rare wildlife and plants while expanding park access for the underserved Grandview-Thorpe neighborhood. Though the transfer is approved, it still needs $30 million in state funding — ranked fifth among six projects — pending legislative approval in the upcoming session.

Spokane’s Latah Valley just pulled off a major win: nearly 200 acres once slated for a thousand new homes are now headed to become a public park, thanks to relentless community advocacy. Conservation groups documented rare habitats and bird species, proving the land’s ecological value, while locals celebrated a long-awaited victory—especially since this neighborhood has the worst park access in the city. The state’s Board of Natural Resources has recommended funding the transfer, but the Legislature still needs to approve the $30 million request. With grassroots pressure mounting, this could be a landmark moment in urban conservation, showing how persistence can turn development plans into green spaces for all.

When Eastern Washington’s linebacker Myles Mayovsky made a gutsy, unplanned play that ended in a touchdown for the opponent, his coach saw it as proof of instinctual growth—not a mistake. A five-year walk-on who started with zero clue, Mayovsky now leads by example, showing how commitment and experience build confidence on the field. Despite a tough opener, the Eagles’ veteran defense is leaning on players like him to rise to the moment, proving that instinct, forged through time and grit, can outshine rigid playbooks.

Bonney Lake’s police have reactivated 22 AI-powered license plate readers after pausing them since December to comply with new state laws limiting their use to serious crimes like theft, missing persons, and sexual assault—while banning immigration enforcement. The system now includes safeguards like incident-based searches, audit trails, and a 21-day data retention cap. Chief says the tech has helped solve key cases including pharmacy burglaries and hit-and-runs, and insists usage will strictly follow legal boundaries amid civil liberties concerns. Nearby cities also use this tech, though Pierce County doesn’t operate its own cameras.

School’s back in session at Alki Elementary — thanks to a last-minute, tentative teachers’ union agreement that averted a potential strike. Parents breathed sighs of relief after weeks of stress and backup childcare plans, while educators, some calling the ordeal “like being in a tornado,” are now reviewing terms that include an 8.8% pay raise over three years and a new pilot program for special education. Superintendent Shuldiner confirmed the deal is fiscally responsible, letting students focus on learning in newly upgraded facilities, teachers reconnect with their classes, and families finally relax knowing the school year can begin without disruption.

Idaho’s Department of Correction has officially joined forces with ICE under the 287(g) program, empowering state officers to assist in immigration enforcement—especially for inmates with felony convictions who may face deportation after serving their sentences. Though this partnership was already in practice, the new agreement formalizes it, following a similar deal signed by Idaho State Police in June 2025 that’s already moved over 80 inmates. A past hiccup involving premature transports was quickly corrected. With 12 local agencies now participating and 19 arrests tied to the program since 2025, some counties even hold multiple agreements—including one letting local officers act as immigration officers. Despite a failed statewide mandate attempt last year due to sheriff resistance over jurisdictional concerns, cooperation remains strong—and expanding.

A Kirkland homeowner thought a break-in was happening—until officers arrived to find a 30-pound bobcat, not a burglar, causing the chaos. The wild cat, possibly after the homeowner’s own cat, slipped in through an open window and was tracked via drone before being safely sedated and released near Forbes Creek. No one got hurt, and the officers even shared the drone footage of the furry intruder—nature’s unexpected houseguest.

Seattle’s response to a July shooting at Seattle Center exposed critical flaws in its public communication strategy, prompting a citywide review and the potential resignation of its former police chief. While first responders acted swiftly, delays in sharing accurate information via social media and AlertSeattle fueled public frustration. Cities like Kansas City and Providence offer contrasting models—Kansas City deployed rapid-response PIOs within minutes of a Super Bowl shooting, while Providence used text alerts despite early misinformation. Seattle’s inspector general will soon release a third-party audit with expert input, aiming to overhaul how emergency alerts are managed—because in crises, speed, accuracy, and consistency aren’t optional—they’re lifesaving.

The Mariners capped off a tough East trip with a dominant 8-3 win over the Red Sox, fueled by a breakout performance from their bottom-of-the-order hitters who combined for seven hits and five runs. With 25 runs across the series — one of their best offensive showings all season — they bounced back from a brutal sweep in Toronto and a Monday collapse. Bryce Miller delivered a solid return-to-action outing, holding the Sox to just one run through five innings. Twelve total hits in the finale underscored their ability to swing when it matters most, ending the road trip on a high note and sending a strong message about their resilience and offensive firepower.
