Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? Job’s three friends have said their piece, so a young man steps up to offer advice. At first he is hesitant to speak up, but once he gets going there’s no stopping him. Job himself has nothing else to say.

Is suffering directly related to our sin, and why is it so much easier to comment on these matters when they don’t affect us directly? Job’s friend, Zophar, tries to get to the heart of the matter, but his erudite words only add to the noise. Job clings to his integrity, and his knowledge of God’s omnipresence, but there is still no answer to his complaint.

He wonders if the reason for Job’s suffering is that he has committed some sin against God, so he decides to help his friend find an answer. Job, meanwhile, is in despair.
