The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 introduces a groundbreaking dual competition blending elite sailing with environmental advocacy. Here’s why this initiative could redefine the role of sports in ocean conservation.
This inaugural event features a transatlantic race from New York to Lorient, France, where six elite teams will compete not only for speed but also for sustainability. The Racing for the Ocean Teams Challenge encourages sailors to minimize their environmental impact through 30 criteria, including operations, climate advocacy, and education.
With support from IMOCA and 11th Hour Racing, the challenge emphasizes diversity and equity, evaluating each team's initiatives aimed at enhancing ocean health. Last year, Holcim PRB claimed the first Racing for the Ocean prize during The Ocean Race Europe 2025, setting the stage for even greater achievements in 2026.
New accolades include awards for the lowest carbon footprint, outstanding individual efforts, and effective ocean science communication. Winners will be celebrated at The Ocean Race Atlantic Awards Night in September, receiving a trophy made from recycled ocean plastic and €1,000 for their Impact Partner project.
Lucy Hunt, Ocean Impact Director, highlights the potential of sailors to inspire change, proving that success extends beyond the finish line to protect our oceans.
