Almost all of the world's top sprinters are skipping the Vuelta a España this year. Here’s why their absence could reshape the dynamics of the race.
The Vuelta features only four flat stages and seven summit finishes, making it a challenging course for sprinters. It kicks off with a time trial in Monaco, followed by hilly stages in Provence and the Pyrenees, leaving little opportunity for traditional sprint finishes. The first real chance for a sprint comes on Stage 11 in Lorca, with a few more flat finishes following in Loja, La Rábida, and Sevilla.
Instead, the elite sprinters are flocking to Belgium for the Renewi Tour, which promises three to four sprint opportunities across just five days. Notable participants include Tour de France sprint winners Tim Merlier, Jasper Philipsen, Olav Kooij, and Søren Wærenskjold, alongside other fast riders like Jonathan Milan and Dylan Groenewegen.
In Spain, the sprint roster includes Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert, Matthew Brennan, and Kaden Groves, who all excel in hilly terrain. With a staggering 58,156 meters of elevation gain, this Vuelta is poised to be a grueling challenge, making the presence of sprinters who can handle climbs even more crucial.
