Day 3 of the Jeanneau Yachts and 74 Islands Airlie Beach Race Week delivers thrilling competition with perfect sailing conditions, as teams gear up for a lay day tomorrow.
What follows reveals how tight the leaderboard is and why every point matters moving forward.
In Division 1, Julian Bell’s Beneteau First 50, 51st Project (NSW), claims victory, crediting a strong start and clean air for their performance. “We jumped at the opportunity to come back this year,” says Bell, who currently sits seventh overall in a fiercely competitive division. The overall leader is Ian Frankhanel’s Solaris 50, Salt (Vic), with only five points separating the top five. “It’s a very narrow lead – it’s us – just,” admits Frankhanel.
Local Charles Wallis steers MBD41, Reignition, to an impressive eight-minute win in Division 2, while Sam Woodward’s Robertson 950, Corrobboree, tops Division 3 after a day of close racing with Phil Bennett’s King Billy (NSW).
In Non-Spinnaker Division 1, Paul Commins on Carpe Diem seizes the day, winning comfortably over Remco Pen’s Bigger Day Out (Vic). “Perfect sailing,” Commins remarks, highlighting the idyllic conditions of the Whitsundays. With excitement building, the competition continues to heat up!
