  • 26: Finals Mentality
This week’s Wayne’s World show looks at dealing with defeat.
I’ve known some remarkable athletes who narrowly missed out on Olympic medal & even 10, 20 years later look back at their entire athletic career as a “failure” because of that one race loss.
I’ve talked to many professional sport athletes who look negatively at their achievements because the closest they came to a “title” was 2nd.
    It’s challenging!
If you’re a high performance athlete or coach, it is essential you are committed to excellence in everything you do, have a relentless drive to get better, possess a ferocious desire to learn and an unrelenting devotion to continuous improvement but…..
It is also important to learn how to see things in perspective and to accept that sometimes winning and losing are outside your control regardless of how hard you train, the quality of your program, your dedication to sleep, rest, recovery, nutrition, mental skills etc.
Legend Australian Swimming Coach Don Talbot once said, “There’s nothing you can do to guarantee success. However, what we aim to do is increase the likelihood of success by our commitment to preparation“

  • 25: Sideline and Referee Abuse
We look at the bad side – the issue of sideline abuse of referees, umpires, touch-judges and other officials and the upside – the potential for officials to see their role as much about education and sport development as it is about rules, regulations, policies and procedures. • 24: Violence in sport – how can we stop it?
Not so long ago this only meant physical violence on the field between opposing players – but increasingly Violence in Sport can relate to off-field behaviors and words – of players, coaches, fans, media, officials and others. For example, if you go to an AFL, NRL, A-League match these days […]

Not so long ago this only meant physical violence on the field between opposing players – but increasingly Violence in Sport can relate to off-field behaviors and words – of players, coaches, fans, media, officials and others.
For example, if you go to an AFL, NRL, A-League match these days you’ll often see more security staff than maybe you’re used to seeing. These security personnel are there to not just keep obvious acts of violence under control like lighting flares and alcohol fueled fighting but they’ve also been directed to intervene where there’s evidence of verbal aggression particularly anything related to racism, homophobia, bullying, sexism and other abhorrent attitudes.
Bottom line is this… In most football codes the following is falling……. Live crowd attendances TV audiences Kids playing the game at Club level The “codes” – ALL footy codes need to be more diligent in making their Game more family friendly – a safe, enjoyable, engaging experience for everyone – of all ages.

  • 21: How we keep kids playing sport
Sport is a big part of our national identity, and that’s reflected in sport participation rates for kids in New Zealand. It hovers around 90% and that makes us the envy of the world. But 70% of kids who participate in sport drop out between the ages of 13 and […]
