Joe Soccoa and Brad Kurtzburg Discuss the NHL

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz was joined by Mike Puma, who is the NY Post beat writer for the Mets. Riz and Mike go back a long way, to Fordham and WFUV, where they spent time together on the air covering sports and Rams events. The focus was on Puma's time covering the Mets for the Post. Mike broke down how the coverage is going during the COVID pandemic, including his trips back and forth to Florida for Spring Training. The guys looked at the Mets roster for the (hopefully) coming season, dove deeper into some players, like Jeff McNeil, and examined what could happen during a truncated schedule. Mike has a book coming out called "If These Walls Could Talk: New York Mets" that it is slated for release in April 2021. He talked about how the book spans the better part of the last 20 years for the Mets, what it took to put it together, and some of the important names he interviewed, including Mike Piazza. In the middle of all this, Riz threw a curveball and asked Puma to tell the amazing story of how a birthday cake saved the life of the woman who would eventually become his wife, on Sept. 11, 2001 (there is a baseball-related twist). Riz kicked off the show with a quick update on the Strat-O-Matic simulation standings, and Mike hit the mic around the 6:30 mark. Riz came back on the air after a week off and talked with Dawg about his story, and his time in isolation away from the family. He still has a little time left before he can rejoin the population, but so far has fared pretty well. The guys had chatter about the latest Strat simulation numbers, and went over the games and the standings while trying to add some flair to what would have been Jackie Robinson Day around the majors. After Riz's Coronavirus recount, the guys turned to MLB and tried to figure out what kind of plans might work when the games return to the field. How long could the regular season be? What kind of playoffs could be contested? Could a March Madness idea actually work on the diamond? Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Where it seems there is none, he's taking the Strat-O-Matic simulation of the 2020 MLB season as seriously as if it's happening in real life. If you're tired of hearing of Coronavirus and COVID-19, then this is your solace for about a half hour (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less) a day. Riz, who has brought you an episode every single day since the season started, gave you the scores and highlights from a full Monday slate of baseball, with the spotlight on young white Sox slugger Eloy Jimenez and Royals lefty Danny Duffy. Could Jimenez battle for the Triple Crown this season? Riz also paid tribute to Hall-of-Famer Al Kaline, who died April 6. Kaline was a legend for the Detroit Tigers, and finished in the top three of the MVP voting three times, with a couple of near misses to Yankees catchers.
