“Make a lot of money, help a lot of people, have a lot of fun.” In this episode, Eric Kasimov chats with David Meltzer, speaker, author, entrepreneur, and Co-Founder of Sports 1 Marketing.
David is a difference-maker in the sports industry. David and Eric explore what happy means to David, how he dealt with losses, and how to handle obstacles life throws at you, including the pandemic the world is dealing with today.
As David says, “everybody needs to be creating and giving content”. There is opportunity out there — go get it!
Quick story about how we connected with David Meltzer
It was December 2017. An intern was finishing up college at Western Carolina University. As he was connecting me with interesting people when he came across a college student slash entrepreneur. That person was Jake Fleshner. Jake was in school at the University of Michigan. While we won’t get into that school up north (that’s an Ohio State thing if you know what I mean!), Jake and I had a great chat that we recorded for a podcast episode. It was important for me to chat and learn from people at all stages of their careers. That’s a reason one of our podcasts is called “Entrepreneur Perspectives”. I want to hear different perspectives.
After Jake and I finished the podcast, we stayed in touch here and there. Of course, as always, time flies by. Jake Flesher graduated and now works full-time for David Meltzer.
Jake’s story on how he met David Meltzer is an inspiring one. Basically, he was told by Gary Vaynerchuk when he interned for him to keep an eye out for Meltzer. Jake took the advice and he found David at SXSW, walked up to him, and told him he wanted to work for him–yes he went for it! He then met him in New York City soon after. He then interned for him. He then proved it out. He then got a full-time job working for David Meltzer. He went out and did it.
Fast forward again. Jake reached out to me a few weeks ago to catch up and ask if we would like David to appear on our podcast. This is that podcast episode!
There’s so much to take away from that quick story. Here are a few things that stand out to me:
Thank you to Jake for staying in touch, the connection, and making this happen.
Thank you to David for his time, inspiration, and energy.
David’s life mission is “to empower others to be happy.” We are grateful David stopped by to chat with us on the SportsEpreneur Podcast while on this journey of his.

From Eric after the chat with Cullen Jones, USA Olympian
Recently, I had the opportunity to chat about the Olympics, the athlete’s mindset, and stories from the pool with Olympian & gold medalist, Cullen Jones.
The combination of podcasting, networking, and access to good people has me excited about the opportunities in communication.
Excited because of the people we get to chat with and learn from.
Excited because if done right, there is potential to cut through the spam–you know the messages where people try to sell you on first-contact through social media?!
I remember Cullen well from the Olympics and had become so impressed not only by his 100M Freestyle times but also what he was doing with his platform. Simply put, Cullen is and always has been a man on a mission! From helping with the Novant Health Foundation to working with kids for the Make A Splash initiative with USA Swimming to his motivational speaking.
Thanks to LinkedIn, podcasting, and Cullen for being generous with his time, I got to spend 3 hours over 2 days talking to a real difference-maker about swimming, the Olympics, Coronavirus, mental health, and stories of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
Thank you to Cullen for his time, kindness, and inspiration!

In the middle of our chat, I ran into a technical glitch. But thanks to Cullen’s kindness, understanding, and the fact we weren’t going to let a little obstacle get in our way, he joined me for a part 2 which added even more than I could have imagined.

From Eric after the chat with Mark Robinson of The Modern Day GK:
Today I had the opportunity to chat soccer/football with Mark Robinson of The Modern Day GK on the SportsEpreneur Podcast.
The combination of podcasting, LinkedIn, and access to good people has me consistently amazed. Amazed because of the people we get to chat with (and learn from) and the fact that some still think it’s okay to pitch and sell on first-contact through social media.
I met Mark on LinkedIn as I was impressed and intrigued by his goalkeeping content. So much so I told my son to follow their account on Instagram. To which my son said, “Dad, I already follow The Modern Day GK! All the keepers I train with follow them. They have the best keeper videos!”
So maybe I was a bit late to the game! Nonetheless, he isn’t wrong. Their content is brilliant. Their following & engagement… through the roof.
And thanks to LinkedIn, podcasting, and Mark being generous with his time, I got to spend 90 minutes talking to a leader in this sport about mindset, positivity, David de Gea, Jordan Pickford, monetization, building a brand, family, and a story that absolutely blew me away.
Thank you to Mark and his team for the time, insights, and uniqueness.

Positively impacting the lives of baseball players, fans, and the city of Sacramento. In this SportsEpreneur Podcast episode, John Priore chats with Chip Maxson, General Manager of the Sacramento River Cats. The River Cats are the AAA Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. We discuss mentoring, the city of Sacramento, and leading a baseball organization.
Chip was the 2019 Pacific Coast League Executive of the Year. He led the Sacramento River Cats to the 2019 AAA National Championship.
John spent time with Chip at Sutter Health Park, the stadium the River Cats call home.
Chatting with leaders in the sports industry is a passion of ours at SportsEpreneur. So when John knew he would be spending time in Sacramento he made it a priority to connect with Chip Maxson, leader of the AAA National Champions. After we had the opportunity for a podcast discussion with Galen Duncan, a leader for the Sacramento Kings, it became clear to us that SacTown is a special community. John saw this Sacramento community first-hand and was impressed.
One thing that stood out was the way John was treated at the River Cats stadium. The people were gracious, the atmosphere was lively, and the culture was inspiring. Chip had a way of storytelling that we look for in a podcast guest and it’s obviously been an asset of his as he has grown in the baseball world. Besides sports and business lessons, tales of perseverance, and captivating baseball stories, we are motivated by the kindness of the River Cats and the city of Sacramento.
We’re grateful for Chip Maxson and everyone at the Sacramento River Cats for taking the time to chat with John and share stories on the SportsEpreneur platform.
