On this episode of SportsLifeTalkâs You Got Next, we sit down with Ohio University assistant womenâs basketball coach Chelsea Welch for a conversation about coming home, chasing opportunities, developing relationships, and using every chapter of your journey to prepare for the next one.
A Dayton, Ohio native and Fairmont High School alum, Chelseaâs basketball story started when she was just three or four years old. After initially competing in both soccer and basketball, health issues pushed her toward focusing on basketballâand that decision changed everything.
With her father helping develop her game, Chelsea became a relentless worker. She eventually helped Fairmont reach the state tournament all four years of her high school career and capped it by winning a state championship as a senior.
But her college journey wasnât a straight line.
Chelsea originally signed with Duquesne before eventually playing at Pitt and finding her way back home to Wright State. That move helped unlock another level of her game. She became a two-time First Team All-Horizon League selection and established herself as an elite scorer.
Then basketball took her across the Atlantic.
Chelsea signed professionally in Portugal, where being an American import came with one simple expectation: PRODUCE.
And she did exactly that.
Playing for CAB Madeira, Chelsea became one of the leagueâs premier scorers and earned Import Player of the Year honors. She explains what life is really like for an overseas player, from waiting on agents and contracts to understanding that imports can quickly lose their jobs if they arenât delivering.
After beginning her coaching journey away from Ohio, Chelsea received an opportunity to return home and join the Ohio Bobcats. When the offer finally came, there was no dramatic 24-hour decision period.
She already knew.
She was coming home.
Chelsea gives listeners an inside look at the modern world of college basketball recruiting, including the transfer portal, NIL, revenue sharing, early recruiting and the difficult decisions programs face when evaluating young prospects.
But while college basketball continues to change, Chelsea believes one thing still matters tremendously: relationships.
At Ohio, she says the staff wants to know more than whether a recruit can hoop. Who are you away from basketball? How do you treat people? What kind of student are you? Will you fit the culture?
And Ohioâs philosophy extends beyond basketball.
Chelsea explains why the program wants athletes to pursue the degrees and careers they truly wantâeven when demanding majors require the basketball schedule to adjust. The goal isnât simply developing better players. Itâs developing well-rounded young women prepared for life after basketball.
Of course, this wouldnât be You Got Next without discovering the person behind the coach.
Chelsea reveals her love for reading, journaling, painting, coffee shops, exploring new placesâand karaoke.
And Coach Welch can SING.
After revealing that her family takes karaoke extremely seriously, Chelsea surprises SportsLifeTalk by performing Adele during the Initiation. We also learn her playlist includes Mariah the Scientist, Brent Faiyaz, Don Toliver, Tate McRae and Jhené Aiko. Her favorite superhero is Catwoman, Keke Palmer gets the call to portray her in a movie, and her theme song lets everybody know one thing very clearly:
Coach Welch does not play about her money. đ
Looking ahead, Chelsea isn't afraid to dream big.
She discusses her desire to continue climbing the coaching ladder, learning from successful women in the game and eventually exploring opportunities that can push her career to another level.
That's what You Got Next is all about.
The journey isn't finished.
Chelsea Welch is still building hers.
