Squared Circle Pit

I'm really excited to get 3TEETH frontman Alexis Mincolla on the show this week. Alexis talks about getting back into wrestling after going on tour with TOOL, and broing down with Adam Jones about it. He talks about going to recent PWG shows and the recent RAW in LA where he got to meet the Rock. Alexis also shares stories of trying to bring pro wrestling attitude to his high school wrestling matches, meeting Triple H and Stephanie McMahon and everybody's favorite tag team, The Young Bucks.

I'm back after a short hiatus of traveling with an all new Squared Circle Pit. This week I talk to Metal Hammer editor Merl Alderslade, who was one of the early pioneers of the WrestleMetal connection, an inspiration for this very podcast. We talk about Metal Hammer's past dealing with wrestlers, how he got Dave Mustaine to award Triple H the Metal Hammer "Spirit of Lemmy" award, and we get deep into predictions and fantasy booking for the upcoming three WWE PPVs, Elimination Chamber, Fastlane and WrestleMania. Merl also explains the difference between all the British wrestling promotions, including ICW, Progress, RevPro and more. A great chat as always!

He's from Winnipeg, you idiot! We have KEN Mode frontman Jesse Matthewson on the Squared Circle Pit this week. We spend a lot of time talking about the Monday Night Wars, what Raw and Nitro did well, and what they failed at. We talk about keeping up with the frenetic pace of wrestling nowadays, and some of Jesse's favorite matches.

My special guest on the latest edition of Squared Circle Pit is Oscar Dronjak, guitarist of Swedish heavy metal band Hammerfall. Oscar has been a wrestling fan most of his life and discusses how he got into pro wrestling, with limited availability in his home country of Sweden. Oscar talks about some of his favorite wrestlers, what he enjoys about wrestling and he shares some great tales from getting to attend WrestleMania 21 as a special guest of Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee, including great stories from the afterparty.
Here are some photos Oscar took at the after party:

After a long (too long) hiatus, we're back with a fun episode that shifts from the tradition of interviewing metal musicians. I interviewed a leading pro wrestling journalist, Jason Powell of ProWrestling.NET. We talked about the Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match at Survivor Series and the fallout, WWE's storytelling, the state of wrestling journalism.

This might be my favorite Squared Circle Pit yet. I got a chance to speak to longtime WWE fan and wrestling fan in general, Cannibal Corpse frontman George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. George talks about how he keeps up with WWE programming while maintaining a full touring schedule, his favorite current wrestlers, great stories from going to shows in the 70s, including a meeting with Andre the Giant, his thoughts on Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and more.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd be interviewing Maynard James Keenan of Puscifer and Tool about pro wrestling, but here we are. We hopped on the phone to talk about his interest in the genre, how he got into Lucha, his early memories of wrestling including Mighty Igor (clip below), the correlation between being a wrestling and a frontman and his upcoming autobiography, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, out November 8th.

We're flipping the script on this edition of Squared Circle Pit by interviewing a prominent wrestling figure about metal. That person is Gabe Sapolsky, current booker of EVOLVE and vice president of talent relations for WWN. Gabe talks about how he got into metal through seeing the Road Warriors come out to Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." We talk about Gabe's favorite metal bands. Gabe shares a great story about how Morbid Angel's David Vincent and his ECW fandom. Rob shares some early ROH memories and gets some interesting insight from Gabe about it and we spend time talking about Gabe's current promotion, EVOLVE, their big shows this weekend, how their relationship with WWE NXT, William Regal and Triple H came about, and the future of pro wrestling.
Catch EVOLVE 68 and EVOLVE 69 on iPPV this weekend featuring such names as Johnny Gargano (pictured above with Gabe), Cody Rhodes, Drew Galloway, Chris Hero, Ricochet, Zack Sabre Jr., TJ Perkins and many more. Get info at DGUSA.TV. Check out some clips below as well.

This week's guest is one of the most knowledgable guests we've had on the show so far – I'm talking about Scott Kelly of Neurosis. We dig deep into how Scott got into wrestling, his favorite wrestler at the moment, Pentagon Jr., having members of the EVOLVE roster use his music, and his thoughts on EVOLVE matchmaker Gabe Sapolsky. We also discuss old-school WWE, New Japan and a lot more.
