ST #8 - Racism

Listen Later

Racism:

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” – Audre Lorde.

Racism is not new to this world. Since the beginning of mankind, people are suffering from racism. From the ages of colonization, the slavery etc. people with a different skin colour are regarded in a different way. It pains us to see that in 2021 this problem is still very much alive. More and more, we see polarization in the community between ethnical groups, which causes extreme left and extreme right wings. We need to come together, as human beings, and stop thinking in black and white, and find common ground. We don’t always have to agree, but we should be capable to understand and respect each other.

In this chapter we interview Kellin Ndongala Luanda, somebody who has suffered racism himself while growing up, and is still facing from time to time. Somebody who wants to share his values and ideas on how to tackle racism with the audience and especially his 2 sons.

Main take-aways from this podcast:
- Everybody can have racist thoughts. Acknowledge them, and try to learn from that in order to work on the problem.
- Embrace differences. You don’t have to agree with everything, but be open to learn and listen to each other.
- Integration in the society is critical to attack racism.
- Don’t bury the past, even though it is nothing to be proud of. Use it to educate the new generations so the same mistakes can be avoided.
