ST. AMBROSE | PATRON SAINT OF MILAN
Feast Day: DECEMBER 7
Are you afraid of bees? Oh, they are not harmful! They give us honey and God uses them to show His predilection as in the life of our saint today – St. Ambrose, Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church. It is recorded in the infancy of St. Ambrose, that one day his parents found a swarm of bees on his bed. When they flew away they left honey on his face. His parents considered it as a sign of his future life.
Ambrose was born in the year 340 in Gallica, Belgica, now, Trier, Germany to a noble Roman family. Soon after his birth, his father, who was a governor, died. His mother brought him and his siblings Satyrus and Marcellina to Rome where he grew up and studied. He took up rhetoric, literature and law. Following the footsteps of his father, he
In 372, he was made governor of Emilia and Liguria with its headquarter in Milan. In 374, the Arian Bishop, who usurped the Diocese of Milan, died. The followers of the Arian heresy, which was very strong that time, wanted another Arian Bishop, but the Catholics refused. In order to prevent a tumult, Ambrose, the governor, went to preside over the election. While Ambrose was speaking, the voice of a child was heard saying “Ambrose for Bishop.” The whole assembly took this as a sign, and since he was acceptable to the Arians, Ambrose was chosen by the assembly to be the next Bishop. Ambrose respectfully refused the choice for he was not ready for it. He was not even baptized. He escaped and hid himself in the house of a senator, but they soon found him. He was promptly baptized, received Confirmation, was ordained priest and consecrated Bishop on December 7, 374.
Not long after, the Arians, who believe that Jesus Christ is not co-eternal with the Father, became the bitter enemies of Ambrose. And as Bishop, he tried all he could to convert them, such that in 385, not one Arian remained in Milan. Ambrose preached, built churches, distributed his wealth to the poor, the orphans, the imprisoned and the unfortunate. He prayed, fasted made abstinences, and sacrifices. His priests followed his holy life. Many women entered religious life for he preached that virginity is superior to marriage, although marriage is holy. The entire city of Milan, nobles and poor, became closer to God and they admired and loved him. Yet, he encountered many oppositions. He persuaded Theodosius, emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, to repent of his crime of killing 7,000 Thessalonians. About this time he met and converted Augustine, whom he baptized on Holy Saturday 387, and who later became the great St. Augustine of Hippo, another Doctor of the Church.Ambrose was a prolific writer and an eloquent preacher. His writings on the doctrine are often quoted as a proof of Christian teachings. His sermons are models for all preachers. He had musical compositions and to him we owe the practice of the alternate singing in church in two choirs. He died on April 4, 397 at the age of 57. St. Ambrose is one of the four early Doctors of the Roman Catholic Church. A Doctor is one who made significant contribution to the theology of the Church. Today, his body can be viewed in the church of St. Ambrogio in Milan.
Prayer: Dear God, through the prayers of St. Ambrose, strengthen our faith in the teachings of the Church, and enable us to fulfill our Christian obligations.
