St Paul appeals to the image and context of the freeing of slaves, and the adoption of freed slaves as heirs, to illustrate how Jesus’ death on the Cross redeems us from the slavery of sin and opens the way to becoming, in Christ, adoptive sons and daughters of God. The challenge is to live lives that are consistent with our freedom and adopted status.
