Together: Fellowship, Forgiveness, and Faithfulness (Not Perfection)

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: St. Augustine of Hippo was born on this date, November 13th in A.D.354 in the northern African town of Tagaste. He influenced western Christianity through his many writings. Among them is his famous, Confessions, which is a biographical praise of God's mercy to him. Besides his theological writing, he was a great thinker. One of his profound insights was in the area of time and eternity. He wrote in one of the later chapters of his Confessions: "How can the past and future be, when the past no longer is, and the future is not yet? As for the present, if it were always present and never moved on to become the past, it would not be time, but eternity." Thus, Augustine saw God's eternal presence with us from now to eternity and God's grace in Christ continuing with us.

Together: Reaching Beyond

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Today, November 6, is the heavenly birthday of the German Lutheran composer, Heinrich Schuetz (1585-1672). He lived in the seventeenth century and was one of the most famous Lutheran composers prior to J. S. Bach. He wrote over 500 compositions, although few have been included in American hymnbooks. One hymn was in The Lutheran Hymnal, #548, "My Inmost Heart Now Raises, A Song of Thanks, O Lord." It's a wonderful text based upon Psalm 138 and is appropriate for this Thanksgiving season.
